I think my manager lied. I want to get into devops. I dont trust him. Toxic work culture

This might be a long one.

Tldr : Manager put us on pip and claimed he didn't know what it was. He lied. Hr told us all managers did. I think he shot down my devops chance.

Me and my colleague joined over a year ago as apprentices in it support.

In comes our new manager. More harsher and less lenient. Me and my colleague do 80% of the work. Set ups, tickets. You name it. And everyone in our company saw this.

We work extremely hard. The months went on and it was annual review time
We both got put on PIP as an apprentice. Reason why? We don't have any certs yet ( we're apprentices halfway through our course) and don't do enough. The things he said made us feel unvalued, unworthy and sht. He literally said " if I had the power you wouldn't be part of my team, but you're apprentices".

.. I told my manager I want to get into devops after my course ends. He seemed happy and said he would speak to HR. I spoke to head of hr. And they had a meeting with my manager. My manager told me that HR said their isn't any roles available (my company easily creates new roles for many people) it's a startup.

He suggested I dedicate Fridays into learning devops and shadowing those from that field. He was meant to speak to our upper line manager about it. Its been 3 weeks and he hasn't at all. Now I'm doubting everything he's said about what was said in the meeting.

As that went by, we caught him out on a handful of lies. 1 of the biggest one was when he said to us he didn't mean to put us on improvement needed because he didn't know what PIP is. He claimed he didn't know that PIP is the next step closer to getting sacked. He's been doing IT support for years. We spoke to someone from HR and they told us all managers are told about what PIP

We got put off PIP and rewarded the rest of our bonus.


We assume he said this because he wants us to stay and regrets treating us like sht

Does anyone have any advice? I'm planning on leaving and getting into a devops bootcamp. My progression in this company is clearly going nowhere.

How to Unfederate a WAN Federation Over Mesh Gateways (Consul K8s)

Hi all, I currently have 2 separate KE private clusters.
One for the primary DC, and one for the secondary DC.
My setup is as per the following hashicorp article: https:|/ developer.hashicorp.com/consul/docs/k8s/deployment-configurations/multi-cluster/kubernetes

However, when I go to use consul-k8s to uninstall consul on my secondary DC. I start to see errors that the primary
DC can no longer connect to the secondary DC.

This makes sense, as Consul has been uninstalled. However, after reinstalling and rejoining the WAN federation on my secondary DC. The errors continue in my primary DC, and the secondary DC starts to show errors saying it can no longer find the primary DC.

Is there a correct way to unfederate DC's/k8s clusters that are in a WAN federation over mesh gateways?

I'm imagining that scaling this up must be tremendously hard, as if you install something incorrectly, and you potentially had 50 secondary DC's. These DC's would all start to show errors as soon as one DC was removed.

This seems like and incredibly common use case, so l am assuming I am incorrectly using consul. However, I haven't been able to find any answers online.

At what point would you want a DevOps teammate?

One man army, DevOps hero, or whatever companies or you guys call it here.
I just now read a comment about how being the lone bitch for everything in DevOps will retard your career.

So, please tell me if you know:
What would you do or tell your higher ups that could nudge everything in a better direction?

At the moment I'm mostly putting out fires and can't even proactively think about solutions that prevent them.
And the responsibility for all new builds, tests and releases is on me.
The same for automation... and then they develop something completely new, outside of our existing toolchain, and want a pipeline with test matrix in two weeks. Nice.

K8s load balancing scenario on pod crash

Hi all! I have a question and it would be great to get some answers. I started the CKA training and let's say we have 3 pods hosting our online store and they're exposed via a load balancer. A random customer add an item on the cart and he's trying to pay and place the order. What happens if that specific pod where the customer currently is fails somewhere along the ordering process, let's say when the customer insert his personal data? Is he getting a blank page and losing everything and he has to start placing the order from scratch? What can we do to at least keep the product on the cart?What is the best practice for avoiding this scenario? Thanks everyone.

JFrog Container Registry logo display time

I have recently set up JFrog Container Registry (v7.46.11) using its helm installer.

Some stats:

* Docker images uploaded: \~ 30
* Binaries Size: 42 GB
* Binaries Count: 600
* Artifacts Size: 105 GB
* Artifacts count: 1200
* File system: Used: 147 GB / 500 GB (29.4%)
* No of concurrent users: 1 (that's right) and most of time it's idle. Essentially, no one is using it right now.

Issue is when I try logging in, the JFrog logo keeps showing up for almost 30-40 secs. In all sincerity, I love the logo but not the duration for which it displays itself before *actually* showing the login screen. After logging in, everything works fine. No slowness is observed after that. To reduce the logo show time, I tried increasing the `xms` and `xmx` parameter along with the request and limits parameters as well but I don't see any change in the logo display time. Is there any other JVM option that needs tweaking?

Management tries to enforce return to office



Hi there guys!

I am working quite some time now to a really nice company that offers a lot flexibility including a lot remote working and although the management would like more of us to be more often to office most people for various reasons (some are living on other cities) are ignoring it.

This month though there was more pressure like our manager of our team asked us to choose TWO days per month that as a team will be gathering on the office and i see they are trying to establish it especially from January of the next year.

Thats not a problem for me and its nice to see other members of the team that i dont see often , however i'd like to have the choice especially for summers that i travel a lot to my home country etc to be able to stay longer without having to be in office for just for the sake of being in office.

So far i have to visit the office maybe even 6 months LOL

I feel that like a step back in terms of freedom and i am afraid if they get ideas to start asking more days per month...

I was thinking if there are ways that still i can keep avoiding the presence in office...Like just not comply fully as many other have done in various situations?

Like maybe attend at first a few times in office but then just only attend one per month or having excuses for not being in office ?bring up health issues or anything ?

One branch for development and one for production vs a single branch that deploys only tags to production. Which do you prefer and why?

Personally, the second option seems simpler to me, but it gives me the feeling that it is the least used.

Java code is 1.8 supported, SonarQube version supports Java 11, the build fails in Jenkins

Hi, folks!

I have 2 separate servers on Linux for Jenkins and Sonarqube. The code is written in Java 1.8 and can be compiled using Jenkins. Everything works fine.

It fails at the SonarQube step because our SonarQube uses Java 11, and it fails with this error.

ERROR: Error during SonarScanner execution java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/sonar/batch/bootstrapper/EnvironmentInformation has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 55.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 52.0

How can I fix this?

A recent article I read emphasized how open-source software is the foundation of our current society. As a result, it is up to developers to ensure that they are consuming and distributing the most up-to-date and secure code available.


Most open-source contributors with write access to a project's repository will continue to work on bug fixes and code improvements in the interest of the greater open-source community. However, due to their complexity, many open-source projects are vulnerable to sophisticated and coordinated attacks that have the potential to cause widespread and catastrophic harm.
Because the next potential attack is just around the corner, every developer and organization must step up their game and be ready to move rapidly on vulnerability identification and remediation. When information is gathered and shared, it has the potential to make everyone safer.

Using 2 NPM registries

I am trying to use 2 NPM registries. One of them is a private registry which holds our code and the second one is the global one.

No issues using one of them separately but when I am trying to use both of them always one of them breaks. Stuck on this issue for 2 days already.

How to deal with poking coworkers ?

Hello everyone,
I am a DevOps Engineer with 3 years experience. I am an introvert kind of person.
I joined this company (a startup) 2 months back. I have been able to solve a few problems here, thereby saving time and automating work flows.
However, my coworkers and manager seem to poke me saying that I need to open up more .
They crack jokes among themselves about something I am unaware of and roam around laughing and interacting with other folks.
I am majorly focused on my work, which also involves reading documentation and doing POCs.
(POC = Proof of Concept)

I was working on a POC and it somehow failed. Today my manager said that your POC effort has failed. Don't you feel ashamed? I replied "No, I don't". This is despite the fact that I had informed him beforehand that we should be ready for worst case scenario. To that, he replied that they will take care of it



How should I deal with this?
PS : I am thinking if I am at the wrong place or is there something I need to change in myself.

I am being tasked to ... ( high level advice needed)

I being tasked to help formulate the strategy to transform my app deployment team from app deployment into a devops department.
We handle the code signing and deployments to the internal and external app stores currently.

Is there any good resources to learn about how to pitch devops as a solution and build a team from scratch?
We have amazing documentation and development standards and I really want to make sure I am applying effort where it is needed.
We are 100% on prem and will most likely not be taking on cloud work.
We currently use jenkens/docker to manage our workflows and Pipelines.

Any tool to monitor "what's going on within the company?"

I'm working in a mid-size enterprise, \~150 "software engineers" (developers, DevOps, dba, etc. etc.) and \~20 teams; our infrastructure is on-premise and cloud.


Sometimes a team get an alert because of a problem that this actually related to a change done by another team, eg: the infra team upgrades a Kubernetes cluster, and the metric agent running in the cluster but managed by another team fail to retrieve the metrics for the service "alice", the missing metrics trigger an alarm for the team owning the service "alice"


Is there a "tool" that lists what's happening/happened in the company in terms of deployments, upgrades...actually "anything" (could be a change in certificates) ?
