DevOPs workflow ?

Guys, let me see if I am tripping balls or this is something somewhat achievable. total devops noob here, just know what it means =)

I haven't developed for a couple of years until i got involved in our CTI initiative at my company. Basically maintaning a couple of scripts that grab and parse data from our sandboxes and create stix packages and misp submissions.

It is all done in python and i am using pycharm and our internal gitlab to do most of the work.

Doing this over a couple of times I thought that it would be good to:

1) Have pycharm browse the gitlab (or other?) repository of projects

2) Once I find the repository i want to work on it it would lock the repository (or the file, i have done some research and it looks like there is no repository lock but only file lock on gitlab enterprise)

3) Have the GitLab repository somehow 'tell' Pycharm to setup a remote debugging session where the code on that repository is running.

4) Finally present all the files from the repository as pycharm tabs.

5) As it finishes, push the code to gitlab which will do CI/CD

Finding Good DevOp'ers?

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to ask, but a friend has asked me for advice on finding a good person/people for her website. The MVP started as a Wordpress site with lots of customization for all the API's they needed to hook into all the data sources required for her business. The dev who did the MVP is about at the top of her skill set and I suggested that she containerized the site and break it into microservices for the 2.0 site, as well as create a standardized build environment using Docker so anyone else brought in could jump right in. Unfortunately, the dev has zero experience with any of this and has prevented any real progress with the 2.0 version my friend wants to launch. She feels held hostage by her dev since she isn't a technologist and has no contacts in that arena. I though I'd ask here to see where you guys find good people for project like this. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and mods, sorry if this question goes against any rules here.

Is the AWS Devops Certified Engineer a good introduction to devops?

I currently use AWS at work and have been wanting to learn more about devops and possibly work towards getting a devops role.

Is this an overall good cert for learning devops practices and tools? I know you're locked down to AWS tools, but I'm wondering if the fundamentals and processes and are the same and if the knowlege would translate to more commonly used open source tools. Thanks!

Terraform in resume

Hey community, I've been using Terraform extensively for the last 6 months to **build and provision the architecture of my team**. This involved writing modules for a variety of services such as APIs, queues, functions and others. But now that I am trying to update my resume, I have found it difficult to describe the work as it is literally building and provisioning infrastructure through Terraform, which is one bullet point. I had to do the same issue when adding the Serverless Framework to my resume; which I was using to do the same but in a different team.

Will having one bullet point be enough? Any ideas of how to provide better information? Thanks in advance.

Should a developer be familiar with SRE practices?

Hi. I am a front-end developer who only worked with javascript related staff.

Recently our company switched development approach, so every developer now has to be familiar with Kubernetes/Jenkins/SLI/SLO and etc. The official reason is that our SRE guys are overloaded and we have to help them by solving some trivial DevOps problems without their involvement.

It's not a small company, we have \~600 R&D people in EU.

What do you think about such an approach ? I have now access to all AWS/Azure environments (except prod) and I'm a little bit worried about it. (I am also thinking of deploying minecraft server to ur cluster)

Also, I am extremely confused with Kubernetes (the third day trying to configure Traefik ingress service on local microk8s cluster without success). There is a lot of information on the internet and it differs depending on the Kubernetes version and its implementation. Could you guys please recommend some good learning plan(resources) for Kubernetes? I would like to learn it on my local Linux system without the virtualization level (VirtualBox) and not mess with the cloud, for now, this is why I chose Microk8s.

Which tool to use for Automation windows machines patching

So, basically we are looking for a way to automate windows patching in our environment. We are working quite well with Ansible for Linux machines however did not find anything suitable yet { mostly for the fact that restarts are not performed automatically} for windows patching. Anyone found a suitable tool which can achieve such task?

New to DevOps, been a developer for 2 years. Had a few questions!

So for a bit of background: I have been doing full-stack web development for just shy of two years now. Back in February of this year my company shut down and I was laid off. Prior to SaaS web development I did several certificate based courses in Front End Web Dev, Python 3, and C#. I was a helpdesk tech that handled networking and backups at a small wholesale company prior to web development.


Last week I was contacted by a recruiter and managed to land a job with a pretty large company as a Jr DevOps engineer. They were wanting a former developer to train from the ground up, and as my skillset and background matched their must-haves and desired list to a T, I was hired 30 minutes after the interview.

My question is this: I have some experience with things like Docker, AWS (a small bit), and Portainer. I am currently doing some courses on Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and Travis CLI just to get a bit more familiar to reduce the potential "culture shock". Are there any words of advice or warning, or even tips, to a new DevOps guy? Any things to watch out for? Any must-have things?

Have any of you been looking for or found a volunteer opportunity to fight off the COVID-19 pandemic?

I reached out to the American Society for Microbiology given their free e-text Principles of Virology and the videos but these kinds of organizations don't usually have the time to manage laypersons such as myself.

Manual QA at career crossroads requests advices on transitioning to DevOps

Iam a manual qa with 9 years od experience, and had to quit my job 1.5 years back due to medical reasons. Now iam recovered, iam planning to upskill. I started with python+selenium and half way through the Python class now. Yet to start with selenium. Meanwhile I have been looking into multiple options to upskill. DevOps is one of the options that has come up, though I have never worked in it and doesn't understand the concept fully.

To be honest , i don't exactly understand the role of a qa in devops. Tried to figure out from Google, unfortunately too much of information and my lack of knowledge about the field makes it difficult for me to understand. Could somebody explain this to me.

Also, how do you transition to qa in devops. Is Python selenium the way or any other path i should know. Also, from a re employability point of view, is there any benefit in certifications like AWS DevOps Engineer without previous experience

Hosting a private DNS using Route53 behind an OpenVPN

Is there any way this could be done? I tried actually creating a private DNS using Route53 but I can't seem to connect behind the VPN. I also tried to connect to it using a Windows instance. What I'm trying to test is I deployed a flask app in my linux instance and it is accessible through the privateIP:80. I am trying to access it with the dns I configured in Route 53. I already tried to enable the needed configs in the VPC and routed the config to the private IP. Am I missing a step here?

All of the tutorial videos I've are only trying to ping an instance but I want to navigate to the Web App. I just need some help with this and if you guys need more info I could maybe state it in your question

Terraform azure app service manual scale

PS: looked at azurerm_monitor_autoscale_setting but you must provide and I only want it to maintain a constant three instances.

Those with "DevOps Engineer" titles, how much code do you write?

Just curious, as so much of DevOps is surrounded by infrastructure and deployment tooling, how many DevOps Engineers are writing application code on a regular basis as part of their job? How much of your job is performing this work?

I wonder, because there are many who come to DevOps from a purely ops background, and I really don't understand how they could be very inept at pure dev work.
