Ukrainian family relocating to BC, Canada - pls recommend employment Agency

Hoi! Looking for help.

We are a Ukrainian family, with couple young children, moving to Vancouver this summer. We have our work permits, SIN, Bank Acc in hand.

I'm looking recommendations for Employment agencies in Vancouver who place DevOps, DevSecOps, SRE roles.

I've 20 years exp from Solaris server rooms to Linux/DC builds to Virtualization, to cloud - container farming, CI/CD (GitOps, CircleCI, Jenkins) , K8s orchestration (CKAD cert) - tf and ansible. Solid on networks, physical and cloud logical implementations.

Thanks

How often are you working off-hours or extra hours

I started a new job 6 months ago and for the past 3 months I'm feeling a bit frustrated with the number of extra hours I seem to be expected to put in and how often I am required to work off-hours because we cannot make simple changes during regular working hours.

I have regularly had to put in anywhere from an extra 1-3 hours of work everyday for the past 3 months (lack of on-boarding or assistance from team/manager so I am putting in extra hours debugging systems and tools I don't know) and in addition I am often required to work off hours (past 5pm) because we cannot make changes during the regular 9-5 (restarting Prometheus/Splunk/etc).

This is not including on-call, which has its own frustrations and constant firefighting...

I am becoming increasingly frustrated because this means I am basically not allowed to have any life outside of work during the week, which leads me to be too exhausted during the weekends to really do anything other than lay on the couch. I am already looking at other positions, but I am curious how widespread this is. This is certainly not something I have experienced in my other two DevOps jobs I've had before this one, but I don't know if those are unique or not...

How much generic knowledge to expect from candidates?

TL:DR; skip eveything and just answer second question on bottom.

Let me preface that I know there is general depracation of devops title (I know a company where L1 support is "junior devops" even if they work on insurance helpdesk, plenty of companies where devops is a clickops operator just following the script to manually install Windows updates).

The candidates that I'm talking about seem to have actually been doing something with actual servers and clouds unsupervised and they are applying for senior devops position and been screen as well as possible by HR, so noone with a fake resume and all have years of experience in devops.

When I'm doing interviews I've noticed a big problem with candidates who seem to lack general knowledge about IT and even about things they list as part of their resume.

I see a candidate has a couple of years of experience listed with a cloud provider and self-assesed as 4/5 but when I ask him the name of service that runs virtual machines (like EC2) it turns out they don't know because he only worked with serverless. It's not a trivia show so I'm not going to quiz them on exotic services, there are plenty of services when I don't have the foggiest what they could do. But if someone claims they have years of experience in AWS I do expect them to have heard of the basic services.

Or I talk with candidate who is currently working as a senior devops, he says something about database on his project, I ask him what database they are using and they don't know, I ask a few follow up questions and it turns out they can't name a single database engine,, I checked if he understands it, I say we use postgresql for example, does he know any other? He doesn't. I don't want a guy who knows internal working of a database, but I believe you should be able to give most basic answer to question what is a database, table, index ("that thingy that makes queries faster" is alright answer).

Different candidate we were talking about linux administration, he answered a few questions correctly, seemed to know how to check what's going on on the server, memory, networking, didn't know what a kernel is. His best guess was it's an application that's installed on the server and maybe has something to do with firewall. I don't expect much, just a rough understanding it's the core of a server, I would accept answer "core of a server".

I get candidates who never heard of DNS, candidates who have RHCA but don't know what Ubuntu is (like at all), candidates who have no idea how a website could work (not the question about what happens when you type address in the browser bar which is fun, I mean a general understanding of webservers on ELI5 level).

Okay, rant over. Here I'd like to once again say that I don't expect some deep intimate knowledge and I don't try to outsmart candidates. I also don't believe that to do normal devops work. By normal I mean maintain a webapplication that is big enough to have a small team of devs working on (so not a WP website belonging to a local florist) and has enough traffic that things can sometimes happen but not enough to require you to innovate. You'll be lucky if you have more than 2 servers. And I expect you to be able to both setup it up from scratch or takeover existing one, I don't expect you know everything but should know what to look for. Anything about networking layers, BGP, kernel configuration and other gimmicks that some people here expect from candidates I don't care about.

And you can work with something for years and never actually use some parts of it. For example I have over 20 years of experience with Linux and only once I worked with a server that had multiple real users on it. Not multiple services running, not multiple admins connecting, actually multiple people who logged into that servers at once and were doing their own things there. And that server was configured by someone else so I have very little idea about multi-user environments. Another example is that when in my current project we need a
Lambda it's usually something urgent or complicated and so for 2 years I haven't been able to assign a good coding task to our junior. But I still expect him to know what Lambda is.

Okay this time really rant over. So I have two (yeah, I know I can't count) questions:

1) How much generic knowledge to expect from candidates? Like should I expect them to know what database is, what is SSD (that it's a type of disc at least), that NVidia makes GPUs and that Windows is done by Microsoft? Not knowledge that is usually related to work but it's better to know than not

2) How much general knowledge to expect from a topic that candidate claims to know, and this is most important part of it and better than the whole rant above.

Should I expect the candidate to have basic level knowledge of core services in the cloud even if in their role they never used it?
Should I expect the candidate to read something about the subject (like when microservices were getting popular awareness of them) or stay roughly up to date on the news (like they're working with X and there are announcments everywhere in will get Y feature).

Any intersect between Data Science/Data Engineering and Devops?

The future is synergy! Or something.

Anyway is there any role that requires both DevOps and Data Science/Data Engineering?

(I guess there's MLOps but that kinda feels like cheating.)

Stepping up the YAML engineer game

So I‘m very much a YAML/Bash Engineer kind of guy.

My skills so far have been largely focused on the Ops-y/Linux Admin side of things and consisted mostly of configuring Nginx here, dockerizing an app there, troubleshooting Postfix/mail issues here and I just recently completely dockerized and built a testing and deployment pipeline for a previously natively installed Linux web app and it was awesome.

I‘m hungry for more and am very inclined to step up my programming game.
But here‘s the deal: I was taught programming in C++ as my first language ever at 15 y.o. and suffice to say, I was very bad at it and it made me hate computers and especially programming for a stupidly long time.

I know how to build basic Bash scripts doing various things and I could, with some struggles, iterate through an array in PHP but that‘s about it.

Do you have recommendations for learning materials, exercises, maybe a small project idea for me to light my flame of love for coding?
Especially with focus on modern best practices (code style, best practices for local dev etc.)

Anything but building websites in vanilla PHP+CSS or a calculator in C++ (shudders)

Thanks!

Using Serverless to Retire Servers On Premise and Save Money

I know that Serverless is usually talked about in the context of the cloud. But the model doesn't necessarily require a public cloud.

In this time of (pre-?) recession, using a serverless model on-prem can save money too.

I work as an SA and I've found that many customers have workloads that sit idle for long periods of time. So that hardware that they're paying for (usually over provisioned) also sits idle. For some workloads, companies could save by retiring hardware, combining apps that run at intervals, and sharing cores.

This requires a platform like Kubenetes/Knative that can do that.

Has anyone here done this or thinking about it?

How do you debug CI/CD pipelines? Breakpoints?

I've mainly worked with Jenkins and GitHub Actions. But I always find myself adding debug messages and rerun the pipeline. In certain cases, the pipeline could take hours to reach the point I am interested in.

Running commands locally helps, but it is not always representative of the real CI/CD environment. For example, tools are not available for MacOS, or they have different behaviors.

Where I work, we deal with a lot of these issues, especially with GitHub Actions. So we decided to find a solution and we came up with CI/CD Breakpoints. It is 100% open-source.

Do you have a different approach to debugging CI/CD pipelines?

Need guidance for a webinar related to Kubernetes Clusters

We are doing a webinar on Kubernetes clusters. I have to help in devising content for the webinar which is supposed to be helpful for everyone who is working in this field, including the senior officers.

I would greatly appreciate if you can answer these questions.

1. What kind of content would you want this webinar to cover about Kubernetes clusters?

2. In your experience, what are the most significant challenges you face when managing Kubernetes clusters?

3. Are there specific pain points related to visibility, cost control, or security compliance that you consistently encounter?

4. Have you come across any unique or complex problems that you have yet to find effective solutions for?

5. As a senior role, what are the key areas where you feel additional support, tools, or resources could significantly enhance your Kubernetes management experience?

6. What specific outcomes or benefits would you expect from a product designed to address these challenges?
