iis web.configs best practices in production?

Hey all! In the past year, I’ve slowly been working more in a DevOps capacity for a medium sized company. We’re still a windows shop using iis to host .net web apps. We don’t really have any pipelines setup yet. Code is manually pushed to the servers(yes I’m crying too). Long story short, can y’all point me in the right direction as in,how to appropriately manage web configs that are constantly needing to be changed? Ansible, GitHub? How do I stop the madness?

creating a powershell container with M1

hey guys,

maybe it was a mistake, but I got myself a M1 MacBook and I am struggling a bit more than expected.

I have to use powershell for some old legacy azure stuff (which I want to migrate somewhen) but have to test it first.

Is there any ready-to-use docker-container to ramp up fast to get my scripts up & running? Any hints how to do that in case it does not exist?

Load Testing on WebSockets

I'm looking for software recommendations for load testing websockets. Apache JMeter doesn't have native integration with websockets and the plugins don't seem to work.
Ideally it should be something where I could specify all websocket messages at once along with the authorization headers.

Consolidating tools in our pipeline?

Currently we're in the process of evaluating/adding additional stages into our Azure DevOps pipeline and there's growing concern that we're heading towards maintenance hell.

We have Azure DevOps that holds our code and runs our pipelines. Tickets are hosted via YouTrack (used to have TeamCity, too, but moved to ADO).

Right now we want to add SonarQube and TestRail for code analysis and testing.

We like ADO, so it would be good to have tools integrate with it without having to sweat, but it looks like we'll be running a lot of services to manage our development. Just the maintenance of those tools and services looks like extra work that maybe shouldn't exist.

Is this the reality of the business that you either pay through your nose to get a complete package, or suffer through the maintenance of each separate component? Or did we just go down the wrong path and there's an industry standard "better way" to deal with the very basics? Is YouTrack a "liability" that could be consolidated into ADO for example? Or is there something preferable than ADO? Or everyone has their preference and everyone will suggest something different? :)

We're a .NET team, if that matters.

I am getting these error after running ./update.sh as part of my puppet deployment process.

This is the content of update.sh.

And I am on a Linux version 2.6.32-754.29.2.el6.x86\_64.

When I run yum update I get:

Is it possible to run Active Directory Domain Service locally?

I work on an administrative portal that is heavily tied into active directory. Currently we use a test AD server that the entire team shares which makes it error prone since many people can be making changes. Is there a good way to run a AD server locally for testing and so we can isolate from each other?

Beginner DevOps - Inherited Environment - Are these issues real or just a manifestation of my frustrations stemming from inexperience ?

I need to get some honest opinions about something that I've been thinking about. I want to make sure I'm thinking clearly and might be a bit too close to the problem to avoid confirmation bias (hey, at least I can admit it).


The Problem(s)
We're a Microsoft Windows / .Net shop . We're using a proprietary configuration tool that gives users the ability to view, create, and modify various application configurations that we've exposed through the web UI. This gets stored in the CM database.

My predecessors then utilized a combination of Chef with a bunch of third party cookbooks , PowerShell DSC with several open source modules, and some proprietary configuration tools written in C# to manage the various infrastructure configuration and application configuration.

Our release pipeline is Azure DevOps with a bunch of custom developed tasks (several of which are now using outdated or deprecated functionality) to deploy new releases. This part of the process is the lesser of my concern except, we need to refactor the custom tasks.


My Concern

My concerns are as follows:

Chef requires ruby knowledge and it's not a language I have a ton of familiarity with nor is it one that I'm very excited to learn. Looking at the cookbooks that were written by my predecessors, It has comments in it that indicates to me that they too were not well versed in Ruby. To add fuel to the fire, we're running an old, deprecated version of Chef which makes improvements near impossible. Getting buy in to upgrade the chef servers is difficult.

There are several third party cookbooks and modules in use, many of which are outdated or no longer maintained. We've upgraded our OS over the last 12 months and as a result, some of the PS modules we reference experience weird issues that I then have to mitigate. This issue can be helped through testing new versions of the OS, SQL server, and any related hotfixes or updates. This is something I intend to suggest, but my concern around third party cookbooks and modules remains. They save time, but they tend to add tech debt.


Our infrastructure management runs and release pipelines have become so large and cumbersome that they take longer to run than manually deploying in some instances. While the repeatability and predictability of the pipeline is still a major benefit, management sees time as money and expects better ROI.....and honestly.....so do I.


My Questions


1. Are my concerns unfounded ? Am I simply projecting my frustrations and making a mountain out of a mole hill or do I actually have valid concerns ?

2. I'm beginning to feel like Chef may not be the best tool for the job when it comes to infrastructure configuration. Maybe 10 years when most of this was first conceptualized by my predecessors it was....but today....I feel like Ansible + PowerShell would be the better choice. This would eliminate the need to learn Ruby which is great. I'd rather focus on learning GoLang and Python.
3. I'm concerned that infrastructure configuration and application configuration are too mixed together in our processes. Is this concern real or is this just how most DevOps shops handle something like this ?
