PI A magic sword you inherited, a noble lineage you come from, and an evil king that you can fight. What's the problem? The goddess explicitly told you "You aren't my chosen one."

Original prompt from u/lndle here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPrompts/s/KNYqUGRaa9

"You are not my chosen," her words echoed, not from her unmoving lips, but directly into my mind. Though her illuminant body was no larger than an average woman's, her presence dwarfed the sanctum and felt as if it would consume the entire cathedral. Silver light sprawled from her figure in radiant tendrils that brushed across the warrior's worn armor and scarred skin, cool and ethereal. "How did you call for me? It is not your right."

He finally found his voice, reclaimed from awe-inspired silence. "This is the key to beseeching your presence, is it not, Lady Atoria?" He held out a dull white crystal, cracked and stained with blood, but still resonating with a divine light. The Lady of Light caressed the jewel with a few more wisps of light, her body unmoving, before she jerked back and retracted her light with a screech like a chorus of scraping steel. He could feel her piercing glare, not only from those unblinking, statuesque eyes set into her polished face, but from the entire hall around me as if the very walls yearned to witness his death. "Who are you?" she whispered, the words slicing through my brain.

But he did not falter. This goddess has graced him with her presence, it's only fair that she shows due etiquette.

"My name," he answered, slowly standing, "is Renee Valdera, son of the Duke of Shadows James Valdera."

Duke of Shadows, the name that his father was branded before being executed for heresy and treason. All because his family sheltered the displaced people of the Northern Wilds when Holy Emperor Yanis III launched a crusade against the pagan farmer tribes of the north.

"Fallen noble, you dare stand before me?" Her words seethed in my eardrums. "Why are you here, mortal? Only my chosen may stand in my presence."

"Your chosen? You mean this guy?" Renee unhitched a sac from his belt and tossed it at the Goddess' feet. Holy Emperor Yanis III's head rolled out with a dull thud, his dented crown entangled in his frenzied, bloodsoaked hair now prominently featuring an empty gem socket. "He was a tyrant, a mad king who persecuted his people in your name."

Renee barely had a chance to unsheath his sword to deflect the heavy lash of light that the goddess launched at him. She screamed with a deafening symphony of a thousand shattered tower bells as she pummeled silver arcs at Renee. The impact blasted him down the length of the hall, throwing his body through the grand cathedral doors into the courtyard.

Renee pulled himself to his feet, his body singed with holy fire but still intact. Violent light streamed from the windows of the cathedral and erupted from the cracks in its crumbling walls, and as the opulent tower collapsed, the goddess emerged from the dust.

"Mortal, how do you still stand?" She questioned, the voice ringing in Renee's head with a mix of rage and surprise. Renee readied his sword before him, a pulsing, twilight-black blade etched with burning blue runes. It seemed the sight of it was enoigh of an answer for the goddess' question.

Renee braced himself against the following barrage of silver light, now prepared enough to harness his sword's magic. The harsh light bounced away and dissipated against his sword's ecliptic barrier as he agonizingly pressed on step by step against her divine wrath. In a wide, excruciating sweep, he knocked away the ribbons of light and stood once more face to face with the embodiment of light.

She spoke once more, this time a sharp, apprehensive whisper like a tightening steel thread. "Why do you profane against me?"

"Because," Renee replied through gritted teeth, "I am a savior."

"No," her voice spiked to a resonant, metallic clamor of desperation and helplessness, "No! You are no savior! You are not my chosen!"

The dust of the city surrounding them seemed to settle, the moment
stretching behind eons. Among the crumbling wreckage of a city retaken by rebellion, Renee now felt the gaze not of the Goddess' unnatural presence, but the of the people he had fought for. Beggars, peasants, commoners... survivors. He met the goddess' eyes, staring into her blank, immortal face, and tightened his grip on his sword, before plunging it into her statuesque torso, ichor bursting from the dimming light of her body.

"You're right, I'm not your chosen. I'm theirs."
