The Barry Silbert Agreement will be a disaster! Why are BitFury and BitGo supporting this?
It will be a disaster since it has not enough support (less than [25% if Twitter polls](https://twitter.com/philfrancis77/status/866399478978400257) are any indication).
Besides, backroom deals of a few players made behind closed doors and [completely disconnected](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/6clkif/alleged_barry_silbert_agreement/dhvlley/) from anything [technically possible](https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/bitcoin-dev/2017-May/014360.html) are a big no no to begin with!
The core devs would commit reputational suicide to support it. Without their support it is DoA and can only lead to major disruption at best.
I and many others will vehemently oppose this. If one side wants segwit as a hard fork and the other side wants segwit without, doing it with a hard fork is not even a compromise! It's just a desperate move to stop a UASF (BIP148) and maybe even preserve ASICBoost.
Despite, these kind of [horse trading](https://medium.com/@shesek/why-i-dont-support-the-compromise-efforts-9d73a8cce6be) compromises are the worst way of doing development and will be rejected out of principle anyway!
The [IETF](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Engineering_Task_Force), (**which develops the standards for the freaking internet**) on horse trading:
>Even worse is the "horse-trading" sort of compromise: "I object to
your proposal for such-and-so reasons. You object to my proposal for
this-and-that reason. Neither of us agree. If you stop objecting to
my proposal, I'll stop objecting to your proposal and we'll put them
both in." That again results in an "agreement" of sorts, but instead
of just one outstanding unaddressed issue, this sort of compromise
results in two, again ignoring them for the sake of expedience.
>**These sorts of "capitulation" or "horse-trading" compromises have no
place in consensus decision making**
Source: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7282
Very disappointed to see BitFury and BitGo committing reputational suicide here!
(Re-posting, since it's relevant to the "agreement" itself and not just the post I originally [replied](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/6clkif/alleged_barry_silbert_agreement/dhvmtap/) to buried far down in that thread.)

UASF - Bitcoin’s emergency plan to enact SegWit » Brave New Coin
A full year after the code was released, Segregated Witness (SegWit) still has little chance of being adopted by Bitcoin miners. The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) includes a wide range of features, including larger block sizes.
Sergio working for Bitmain was trying to push secret BIP to make patented ASICBOOST more powerful; he's now trying to stall UASF BIP148 SegWit activation!

@SDLerner Basically, that BIP would allow ASICboost implementors to hide that they're using it even better than Bitmain's impl and at even lower cost.
The new scaling "agreement" is a distraction. We need USAF now!
The agreement is just a way to delay scaling and segwit so Jihan can continue to make money exploiting the ASICBOOST.
The agreement is designed to placate people so they stop UASF. **UASF efforts cannot stop!**
I will tell you what will happen if this agreement passed. 1) It would be delayed as there is no mechanism to force anyone to actually follow the agreement. It is not different than the failed hong kong agreement. 2) The result is that in 1 year we will be back at UASF. That is 1 more year that Jihan gets to make excessive profits with ASICBOOST. 3) The small chance the agreement does get executed in 1 year will still mean Jihan gets excessive ASICBOOST profits because segwit as a hardfork does not stop covert asicboost.
**The agreement shows us that miners are scared of UASF**. We need to continue to lobby exchanges and the broader userbase that UASF is the way forward. Waiting another year for another failed agreement among centralized authorities is not good enough!

They say "buy a new car"
Hi guys,
today I was having a chat with my friends, talking about my investment in Bitcoin 2 years ago and how it developed beside the crypto trading.
I have now really enough money that I could say "I stop working and travel or buy some things"
I have an old fiat punto, today they said "buy a new car"
First I considered it, but after having a walk with my dog i thought "why should I buy a new car?" I have a car. Its not pretty, its not fast, but it brings me from A to B.
I could buy a new car to show people "hey I made it" but, a big but, I just like to have my coins. I really like to have Bitcoins. It like some people like collecting stamps, gold, or whatever. I just like my coins. I doesn't matter for me, if they are worth 2000 or 100$. It only matters for me to have as much as I can have :)
My life is and was good like it is. But since I got addicted to just collecting Bitcoins it is better. And having a new car and less coins would make my life not better. So when people say, Bitcoin is just speculation.
Yes, for some it is. For me, it is a hobby. So if BTC will crash again, I am just happy to buy more :)
Am I alone out there?

Why r/btc always blame bitcoin developer for the high fee and slow confirmation, although Segwit can solve this problem right now?
r/btc always blame bitcoin developer for the high fee and slow confirmation, although Segwit can solve this problem right now.
They always block Bitcoin from solving this problem.
I think they are a group of ASIC miner, that love high fee.
They want to make a lot of money after they invest a ton of money in ASIC miner but securing Segwit network won't need to use ASIC anymore.
Think difference, Segwit will make Bitcoin great again so they can mine standard Bitcoin network with the high price reward and more transaction (if change to 2-4 MB block size)

Why I am supporting BIP 148 and what needs to happen to pull my support
BIP 148 is the quickest path to killing Asicboost. I believe that it is the Asicboost advantage that is the primary reason segwit has been stalled, many have articulated elsewhere on the reasons why.
As a miner myself I believe the major reason mining continues to centralize is Asicboost. We are approaching maximum limits of chip efficiency and as this happens more manufacturers will be able to compete with Bitmain. However this won't be possible as long as Asicboost exists.
I believe killing Asicboost will lead back to decentralized mining, I will support BIP 148 until an alternative Kill Asicboost BIP gains support and is implemented.
