There are only 66 years between the first flight and the first Moon landing.

On December 17, 1903, at 10:35 a.m., the Wright brothers made history with the first successful powered flight of the "Wright Flyer "at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.

Orville Wright piloted the aircraft, lying on the lower wing to control the wing-warping mechanism, while his brother Wilbur ran alongside to stabilize the machine. The plane traveled 120 feet (36.6 meters) in just 12 seconds, marking the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air, powered flight.

Just 66 years later, in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to ever set foot on the Moon. The crew traveled 240,000 miles from the Earth to the moon in 76 hours.

Remembering the Crew of UPS Flight 2976

The aviation world continues to mourn the loss of three UPS Airlines pilots who perished when their McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, operating as UPS Flight 2976, crashed shortly after take-off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on November 4, 2025.

The aircraft was bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, when it went down in an industrial area near the airport, igniting a massive fire that destroyed several warehouses. Authorities have confirmed 13 fatalities, including all three crew members on board—marking the deadliest accident in UPS history.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause, with early reports indicating a possible engine separation during take-off.

The Flight Crew

UPS officially identified the crew as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond.

Captain Richard Wartenberg

UPS confirmed Captain Wartenberg as the pilot in command of Flight 2976.
Local outlets in Kentucky identified him as a Northern Kentucky resident and veteran UPS pilot remembered by colleagues for his professionalism and steady leadership.

First Officer Lee Truitt

Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, First Officer Truitt joined UPS as a pilot in recent years.
According to New Mexico media reports, he was active in the local aviation community and is remembered for his enthusiasm and dedication to flying.

Captain Dana Diamond

Serving as the flight’s International Relief Officer, Captain Diamond was identified by Texas news outlets as a long-time aviator from Burleson County, Texas. He is remembered locally for his commitment to aviation and community service.

Our thoughts are with the UPS Flight 2976 family, the colleagues who worked alongside this crew, and the friends and loved ones mourning their loss. May they find comfort in knowing that the entire global aviation community stands beside them, united not only by wings but also in sorrow, pride, and gratitude for three aviators who carried the spirit of flight with honor.
