The guy in the tank top is lookout and watches the direction instantly upon arrival of your porch. He is also in nervous gestures. Then they just bee line across a yard, not using walkways like a normal person would. Did "*then knock the door"* mean kick it in this event and they were spooked by the dog? Seems likely to me, as they already had knocked on the door when he said that.


Anyone who wants to rob for possessions doesn't go at 230am to an old folks neighborhood, everyone is home. They already discussed what to ask, anticipating an answer for the homeowner.

Conclusion: they would have jumped anyone who opened that door.
