Another thing to have is an early warning system. Some fishing line and a bell attached to the main door or across the stairwell/hallway of approach.

Something else I've seen done is fishing line attached to the door, ran all the way to the room your going to be doing recon from, attached to a chem-light and covered with a hoodie or piece of cardboard. Basically when the door opens, the chemlight runs out from under cover and lights up the room for whoever is awake pulling security under NODS.

There are plenty of ways to skin a cat as far as an early warning system. In SHTF I would opt for something like a 12 Gauge Perimeter Trip alarm loaded up with a flashbang round or rock salt. Something like that.

Honestly I would start by running as much as I can on a huge propane tank and then have back ups that run on firewood like above.

Solar is always a good option for summer too, obviously.
