Performance for Peace at the sacred oak tree "El Árbol Viejo", Guernica (Basque: Gernika-Lumo), June 14, 2023: Less well known than Picasso's monumental painting "Guernica" is that the city has the "Tree of Gernika", a sacred symbol of freedom for the politically autonomous Basques. Since the Middle Ages, the representatives of the people of the province have gathered under the oak tree (which is still an offshoot of the original tree today) to debate and deliberate on all economic, social and political issues and to take an oath to respect civil liberties. To this day, the tree is the center of political ceremonies, such as the inauguration of presidents. A later mayor aptly said, "Guernica didn't become famous because it was bombed, but bombed because it was famous."
