The tax-free allowance of €1,800 per year was below the threshold at which the problem even begins. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke publicly called the draft "the dumbest thing any government on the planet is currently pursuing." Banks like ABN Amro warned of massive capital flight.

The new coalition of D66, VVD, and CDA has already stipulated in its coalition agreement that the tax on unrealised gains should be replaced by a pure capital gains tax. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen stated through a spokesperson that the law needs to be changed and that they are "not deaf to the criticism." The law still requires approval from the Senate, where the same parties hold the majority. The path forward is uncertain after the turnaround.
