Money quote: "Collectors are not only interested in creating social links; they are also motivated by the messages they can send once these social networks are created. We all know that art is a powerful way for the artist to express thoughts and feelings – but collectors know that art can serve as an expressive vehicle for collectors too. Many thus carefully curate their collections, purchasing only artworks whose display backs up a claim that the collector wishes to make"

Why people collect art
Collectors drive the art world, but what drives art collectors? It’s less about aesthetics than self-identification

Money quote: "It wasn't how things were organised in France and the UK, where the two academics had now settled.
They decided to dig deeper, going beyond their own anecdotal experiences. The result was an Oxford University paper about what they call "kakonomics" - kakos being ancient Greek for bad.
Their premise was straightforward: sometimes parties conspire, whether consciously or unconsciously, to achieve the lowest possible outcome - the most mediocre outcome"

How to be mediocre and be happy with yourself
We're often urged to strive for excellence, to be the best we can be, to push for more - but some argue we'd be happier if we calmed down and embraced mediocrity.

Un anno dalla scomparsa di Oliver Sacks. Fantastico (e tristissimo) pezzo del New Yorker.
Money quote: "year ago, I lost my best friend, Oliver Sacks. For many years, each week, Oliver and I would cruise north on the West Side bike path at sunrise. Alone, our bicycles a few inches apart, we spoke about everything and anything, but mostly about interesting patients, natural history, and food."

Futuro inevitabile?

Eleven Reasons To Be Excited About The Future of Technology
“The strongest force propelling human progress has been the swift advance and wide diffusion of technology.” — The Economist
Money quote: "The Amish also make a distinction between technology they have at work and technology they have at home. I remember an early visit to an Amish man who ran a woodworking shop near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Most of the interior of the dark building was lit naturally from windows, but hanging over the wooden meeting table in a very cluttered room was a single electrical light bulb. The host saw me staring at it, and when I looked at him, he just shrugged and said that it was for the benefit of visitors like myself."

Money quote: "And things can get bad quickly. The ambient light begins to dim. There isn't enough light for you to make out any contrast or details to confirm focus in that little focusing window. And the subjects, they're not standing still. You keep on focusing and reframing for composition, because your subject keeps on moving outside that wafer thin focal plane. The situation becomes untenable. You cannot confirm focus, so you begin to fire away, hoping that your true love will be kind to you."

O forse no?
Money quote: "Kenyon grew up in Northeastern Ohio and stayed in the region to teach; his specific linguistic maps of sounds for General American was heavily influenced by the way he spoke, which is to say, how upper-middle-class non-recent-immigrant white people from Northeastern Ohio spoke"

Sta tornando l'antico paganesimo?

Money quote: "Selecting one sitting posture over another has far-reaching consequences. If you sit on floor mats, you are likely to develop an etiquette that requires removing footwear before entering the home. You are also more likely to wear sandals or slippers rather than laced-up shoes, and loose clothing that enables you to squat or sit cross-legged. Floor-sitters tend not to use tall wardrobes—it is more convenient to store things in chests and low cabinets closer to floor level. People who sit on mats are more likely to sleep on mats, too, just as chair sitters are more likely to sleep in beds"

The world is divided into people who sit on the floor and those who sit on chairs, Witold Rybczynski writes.

Augh!
