La Gran Festa Rinascimentale era iniziata e la società bene di Babbaloni rievocava i fasti dell'epoca ostentando costumi e cerimoniali barocchi. I carri e le carrozze giravano in cerchio nella piazza del Municipio prima di infilare via del Cartoccio - la via della nobiltà babbalonese - sfilando fino alla chiesa delle Abbadesse per la cerimonia della Gallina d'Oro.
Le carrozze esponevano stendardi con gli stemmi delle famiglie nobili di Babbaloni: la gallina nella rete di corda dei Birbanti di Gallinara, il ramo d'ulivo sull'uovo d'oro dei Dell'Ovo, il forchettone e le tre polpette dei Lestofantj di Salsapariglia, il topo rampante dei Malandrini della Torre, il biscotto pucciato nel vino dei Bjscheri del Cantuccio.
Seguivano i carri folcloristici dei partiti politici che si interpretavano l'un l'altro con trovate allegoriche per schernirsi, mentre per ultimi i carretti dei lavoratori arrancavano spinti a mano. Per ultimo il popolo a piedi. I babbalonesi non sospettavano - o forse opportunamente scordavano - che le finanze malmesse del Comune non avrebbero retto ai festeggiamenti e la vicina Teutonia non avrebbe elargito altri prestiti, anzi, avrebbe sguinzagliato i suoi feroci speculatori per spolparsi il paese intero... in autunno Babbaloni sarebbe sprofondata nel baratro dei debiti!
Il sindaco - all'anagrafe Babbeo Babbei - sosteneva con entusiasmo la causa della nobiltà della propria famiglia: i "Babbei di Babbaloni" a cui però mancavano le pergamene coi sigilli reali a prova del lignaggio. Erano andati perduti - il sindaco ribadiva - durante l'incendio della casa di famiglia. La vicenda era nota alle famiglie nobiliari babbalonesi e queste non mancavano di farsi grandi beffe alle spalle del Babbeo! Tuttavia quando avevano bisogno di un favore ventilavano la possibilità di effettuare un riesame araldico della pratica che tutto sommato aveva buone possibilità di approvazione... promesse della durata di un finanziamento a fondo perduto.
La vicesindaca - seduta sul carro della Gallina d'Oro - salutava incrociando i nobili ed eminenti babbalonesi con sorrisi sensuali e strizzatine d'occhio. Questi di rimando salutavano l'avvenente nobildonna con inchini e salamelecchi di approvazione per il succinto vestitino in piume di gallina e la cresta di corallo rosso: "Bellissima! Che abito splendido! Oh che stupende piume bianche!" I nobili di Babbaloni si esprimevano così.
