Qanat or Kariz is a waterway or a tunnel that is dug underground, so that water flows through it to reach the surface of the earth. This tunnel is deep in the ground to connect the series of wells that originate from the source-well. Source-well is usually an underground spring. Qanats are used to direct & manage water for agriculture & other uses. The tunnel of qanat may be several kilometers long until it reaches the surface of the earth.
Qanat was first built by the Iranians, & in ancient Iran, qanat was considered one of the main sources of water supply.
