Genuinely the other day I found myself thinking....

The early 10s wave of "atheism" (airquotes) did genuine, major damage to the western psyche.

Because a bunch of young boys rejected religion....
And then did no work whatsoever to build up an emotional framework of beliefs and philosophies to replace it with.


On a fundamental level the average techbro still has the emotional core of evangelical Christianity he was raised in. But without the religion in there, they had to invent their own "logical" sci-fi versions of religion (which in their attempt to divorce themselves from anything mystical or spiritual, resulted in creating a crueller, less useful, and LAMER version of them)


They have their own eternal hell ("AGI backs up your mind and torments you forever")
Their own salvation through faith ("help in constructing roko's basilisk and you will be chosen")
Their own heaven ("immortality through cyborg ascension and mind backups")
Their own all-knowing god ("AGI")

Except instead of a slightly neglectful father figure and his kickass hippie son, it's all computers with alien minds.

(they also have their own versions of the horoscope and of prosperity gospel but let's not get into THAT)
