The Turning Point at Moscow: April 20, 1942.

🔻April 20, 1942 — the day the Battle of Moscow ended, marking a turning point in the entire war.

🔻In the autumn of 1941, the enemy rushed toward the capital, confident of a quick victory, but the city held firm thanks to the courage of its defenders and a decisive winter counterattack that drove the invaders far back from its walls.

🔻It was near Moscow that the myth of the Nazi army's invincibility was shattered — and from here began the long, yet inevitable, path to Victory.

My name is Natalie. I'm the last living Russian teacher on blocked Telegram.

I'm still here. Publishing posts whenever my VPN starts working.

I talk about verbs of motion until my three cats leave the room.

If anyone out there is still unblocked… if anyone still has access to this channel…

I can give you grammar hidden between memes. I can give you phrases that sound sweet but are actually insults. I can even teach you several variants how to say I love you.

So if you can hear me… if you're still there, staring at your screen, wondering why Russian has three genders for inanimate nouns...

Please. Answer me. Type привет. Send a sticker. Anything.

You are not alone…

*clicks "send", watches the spinning wheel, waits for 10 minutes, cries a little...

The slowdown of Telegram in plain sight

Медленный (masc.adj)
[med-li-nyj]
Slow

Медленнее
[med-lin-ni-ye]
Slower

🔻Also it is the comparative degree of the adjective медленный and adverb медленно (slowly): simply indicate a lower speed.

• Телеграм стал медленнее, чем раньше.
Telegram has become slower than before.

🔥Also:

ПОмедленнее (adverb)
[pa-med-lin-ni-ye]
А little more slowly

Вы не могли бы говорить помедленнее, пожалуйста?
Could you speak a little more slowly, please?

Не месяц май!
[ni mye-sits may]
SLT: It's not the month of May!

Meaning:
It's cold outside. Don't dress like it's warm. May hasn't come yet.

🔥 Use this colloquial phrase when someone is underdressed for cold weather, and you want to remind them that spring (or warmth) hasn't really arrived.

Just like in Russia today...

Happy May 1st, Russian learners! ☀️

In Russia, we say:

• Мир! Труд! Май!
Peace! Labour! May!

But for you, let's change it a little:

Май! Учёба! Русский!
May! Studying! Russian!

No work today. Just spring, rest, and one small verb conjugation. Maybe two. No pressure.

С праздником!

Natalie with 💓

Hey, wanna little bit of internet? First time's free.

💢 The mispronunciation of интернет (интЫрнет) tries to capture the feeling of a slightly rough, informal offer.

🐶 A dog-scooterist was spotted in St. Petersburg - the furry one took away a kid's ride. The only scooter rider we approve of!

🔥Some linguistic stuff you can skip:

Отжать (perf.)
[at-zhat']
1) To wring smth dry
2) To take away / to steal / to jack

🔻Originally, отжать meant to squeeze out (like juice from a fruit). In 1990s slang, it took on the meaning of to squeeze something out of someone - hence, to take or steal.

🔻This is not the same as украсть (to steal quietly). Отжать has an edge of open, cheeky, or semi-forceful taking. Often used for comedic effect.

Example:

Хвостатый отжал у ребёнка средство передвижения.
The furry one took the kid's ride.

No guilt. Just fur and determination.

Саммит Большой восьмёрки обкашливает вопросики.
The G8 summit is hashing out little questions.

Обкашлять вопросик (perf.)
[ap-kash-lyit' vap-ro-sik]
SLT: To cough over a little question

Meaning:
This slang phrase means to discuss something thoroughly. To talk it through. To figure things out calmly and carefully.

🔻It comes from Russian verb кашлять (to cough)

🔻The prefix ОБ- means thoroughly.

🔻In English, you'd say: to hash things out / to talk it over / to chew it over

I bet you've never heard this before, or have you?
