Петропавловская крепость
[pi-tra-pav-laf-ska-ya kre-past']

🔻On the 27 of May in 1703, the foundation stone of the Peter and Paul Fortress took place on Zayachy Island, thus marking the beginning of St. Petersburg.

🔻Initially, the fortress was called Zankht-Peter-Burkh, and the construction was headed by the Tsar’s associate Alexander Menshikov.

🔻Many historians believe that the initial project was drawn by Peter I with his own hand, and the mathematical part was carried out by the French engineer Joseph Lambert de Guerin.

🔻In 1803, Emperor Alexander I held a solemn celebration of the centenary of St. Petersburg.

🔻In 1924, a museum was opened in the fortress, and since 1993 it has been considered a historical and cultural reserve.

German philosopher Walter Schubart in his book 'Europa und die Seele des Ostens' (1938) about the Russians:

🔻“Western European man views life as a slave whose neck he has stepped on... He does not look with devotion at the sky, but, full of lust for power, looks down at the earth with evil, hostile eyes.

🔻Russian people are obsessed not with the will to power, but with a feeling of reconciliation and love.

🔻An Englishman wants to see the world as a factory, a Frenchman as a salon, a German as a barracks, a Russian as a church.

🔻The West is driven by unbelief, fear and selfishness; The Russian soul is driven by faith, peace and brotherhood.

🔻Russians were Christians before they were converted to Christianity. Therefore, Christianity spread in Russia not by the sword but by itself, easily and quickly.

🔻This is where the Russian national idea comes from: the salvation of humanity will come from Russia."

• В чём сила, брат?
  [f chyom si-la, brat]
What is the source of power,
brother?

🇷🇺 Я вот думаю, что сила в правде. У кого правда, тот и сильней.
🇬🇧 I think that the power is in the truth. The one who has the truth is stronger.

🔻Брат (Brother) is a 1997 Russian neo-noir crime drama film written and directed by Aleksei Balabanov.

🔻The film stars Sergei Bodrov Jr. as Danila Bagrov, a young ex-conscript who becomes embroiled with the Saint Petersburg mob through his criminal older brother.

🔻It appeared in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.

🔻The film had a sequel, Brother-2, released in 2000.

🔻Danil Bagrov became a kind of 'their lad' or a 'superhero' without superpowers for millions of viewers.

🔻The answer to the famous question 'What is the source of power, brother?' - 'In the truth!' finds a response in the hearts of Russians.

Highly recommended to watch!👇

A subsidiary of Rosatom has started building West Africa's largest solar power plant in Mali.

Built in Sanankoroba near the country's capital Bamako, the 200-megawatt solar power plant will cover 314 hectares, cost USD 217 million and take one year to be completed. After 10 years, the plant will be Mali's property with no debt traps or strings attached.

Only half of Mali's population has electricity, and this plant will account for 10% of their entire production.

Зараза
  [za-ra-za]

🔻In Rus' beautiful girls were called 'зараза' (literally: infection) and the expression 'Какая же ты зараза! (What an infection you are!) made the girls blush with pleasure.

🔻The fact is that the origin of this word is closely related to the verb 'разить' (to strike). So, the girls were called this way when they amazed you with their beauty.

🔻 Nowadays the word 'зараза' is an insulting one⚠️ which can be used in reference to any object that irritates you:

• Вот зараза!
  [vot za-ra-za]
Bloody hell! Holy cow! Shit! etc.

Лоджии Рафаэля
  [lo-dzhi-i ra-fa-e-lya]

🔻Commissioned by Empress Catherine II in the late 1780s, the Raphael Loggias are the exact copy of the Gallery in the Papal Palace in Vatican City.

🔻The frescoes of the open loggias of the Papal Palace were painted after Raphael's sketches. Their copies, made in Italy by a group of artists under the supervision of Christopher Unterberger, took their place in the gallery of a separate building erected by Giacomo Quarenghi.

🔻The Loggias vaults are decorated with scenes from biblical stories, the walls are covered with paintings with ornamentation motifs, known as 'grotesques'.
