• Прототип современной подводной лодки

Prototype of a modern submarine
🔻On February 11, 1720, the Admiralty Board decided to create the “hidden ship” suggested by a carpenter Efim Nikonov. Peter I invited Nikonov to St. Petersburg and ordered the construction of the ship to begin.
🔻A smaller model was ready within a year. The “hidden vessel” was made from planks, copper sheets and leather and looked very much like a barrel with oars. Peter I was pleased and ordered the construction of a full-size ship.
🔻Alongside with the construction of the boat, Nikonov developed the prototype of the first diving suit.
🔻The monument to the first submarine was erected in the town of Sestroretsk, near St. Petersburg.
🔻The work continued until 1728, but after the death of Peter I it was not completed.
