So I will try my best to keep this short as this is a very complicated topic, so see it more as pointing towards the right direction.

Yes the tarrifs are a negotiation tool, but that isnt the main and most important thing. For that we would have to focus on the US debt.

In a few months the USA has to refinance their debt (which as we all know is insanely high). These debts have been issued with low interest rates. However right now those interest rates are very high and thus are a real risk of overtaking tax income and thus dragging the USA into a debt spiral until they eventually have to default.

Hence why the bond market is the most important thing to look at right now. A few important things to know is that when someone sells their bonds it increases the yield (aka interest on the loans when they refinance). The bond market and yields are thus reversily correlated. Another thing to know is that China is the 2nd biggest holder of US bonds with around 10% of all bonds. We can see that China has been selling thier bonds heavily, driving up the yields.

All the actions Trump has been taking are all focussed on combating this issue and China. China is in a terrible spot as they need to boost their economy and need/have been printing a lot of money, devaluating the yuan. This is great for global liquidity, which has been increasing for the last few months and we will most likely see the highly correlated effect in a few days.

Knowing all this should help you understand Trumps moves better as now is the perfect time to take these actions as it massively weakens China, allows the USA to make better trade deals, forces the fed to cut rates and limits the potential drawbacks due to the increase in global liquidity. In short this isnt a trade war but a whole financial war against China and the time that wealth redistributes both world wide and in countries themselves.
