Russian rouble suffered its biggest drop in 15 months and its government bonds tumbled to a more than three-year low amid Moscow's strange and useless standoff with the West.

The rouble dropped after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Washington's rejection of Moscow's key security demands was leading talks into a dead end.

Ryabkov's comments also spooked the market. Such a thoughtful, talented diplomat.

As we have said many times, Kremlin usually punishes Russia while trying to do something with the US. Markets dropped on rumors.

If something really happens they will collapse.
Russia will delay legislation over the use of QR codes for access to public spaces, officials said today, citing “new challenges” presented by the Omicron variant.

The new challenge was actually the unrest in Kazakhstan though.

One thing Omicron really delayed is the annual address of Putin to Federal Assembly. According to Kremlin, it won’t happen in January, the exact day of the address is unknown.

Every new variant of the virus is forcing Putin deeper and deeper in his bunker.
Veteran of Russian politics Zhirinovsky suddenly gave out an insider tip that has been talked about in Kazakhstan for weeks: the "leader of the nation" Nursultan Nazarbayev is dead. It was his death that could be the reason for the war of clans, which caused violent riots all over the country.
Proceeding with Nazarbayev, it’s not actually that important where he is, is he alive or not.

Status of “father of nation” which has been built for 30 years was dismantled in a couple of days. Nazarbayev as a person is gone like he never existed.

Sure enough, his clan still owns enormous assets and is now negotiating with Tokayev about the redistribution of property, money and other rents.

Putin supported Tokayev and sent troops to Kazakhstan, but the fate of Nazarbayev the man is surely a bitter pill to swallow for him.

No transition is possible in Russia anymore. Putin knows that as a person he will also be forgotten in a couple of days, after which redistribution of enormous Russian assets will start.

He will be in Kremlin until he is alive. As a political body.
Russians have spent 64bln of roubles on antiviral drugs against Covid in 2021, according to TASS and other Russian media.

16.8bln, or 25% of the whole money, have been used to buy one particular medicine - umifenovir.

It's not proven that it has any effect against Covid. Then why is it distributed all over the country?

Umifenovir's previous name is arbidol. Tatiana Golikova-Arbidol and her husband Viktor Khristenko are living their best lives amidst the pandemic, in spite of her underwhelming performance as Deputy PM.

Ridiculous corruption.
Kremlin's military activities towards Ukraine and aggressive rhetoric continue to spook Russian markets and currency.

Russia’s stock index went down as much as 6% today. RTS collapsed by 13% throughout the week, costing Russian companies $100bln in value.

About 100000 troops are amassed by Kremlin near Ukranian border. Bunker Putin and his billionaire friends are heading Russia toward a full-scale economic catastrophe.

Perhaps, that’s what their real goal is. Putinism can’t exist without poverty, so why not make it as deep as possible using patriotic sentiment.

Perfect example of “patriotism” being the refuge of scoundrels.
Russia’s net capital outflow totalled $72 billion in 2021, compared with $50.4 billion a year earlier, according to the Russia’s Central Bank. This is the highest record since 2014.

The year overall was favorable for Russia in terms of oil and gas prices. Oil revenues went 52% up, while natural gas export went up 110% in dollars.

Overall Russia earned $490bln, 60% of which, or $304bln,
have been spent on import. Still, an account surplus of $120.3bln is quite a good result comparing to last year.

$72bln of it was immediately taken out of the country. These numbers basically show three long-term Russian tendencies.

First – its export is driven by raw natural resources. Second – in spite of Kremlin’s narrative against offshores and fairy tales about “national capital”, there is none in Russia. Money is going to the West.

Third – it is not a national revenue. It’s the money of Putin and his friends. That’s the way they see it.
Deputy Minister of Transport Vladimir Tokarev has been arrested today on corruption charges. Allegedly Tokarev's arrest is connected with the Spectranstroy case.
Joe Biden came up with an interesting speech about tensions on Ukranian border. The rhetoric of the President was quite harsh.

Biden said that Putin will have to move on. Kremlin has put itself in a bad position by its nonsense demands and now has to do something.

Two things Biden promised in response are military assistance to Ukraine which will lead to lives losses in Russian army, and economic disaster.

The President is ready to block Russian banks an access to dollars and limit the import of goods to Russia.

The US are perfectly capable to collapse Russian economy. In case Biden takes steps he promised the price of dollar could instantly skyrocket to 200 roubles, 300 roubles – we don’t know. With double digits inflation.

Even if Putin stays still, he has already sent a signal to European non-Nato states to join the alliance.
Russia’s Central Bank is to promote a blanket cryptocurrency ban and prohibit all transactions with cryptocurrencies, according to Bloomberg.

Bank of Russia has been arguing on limiting cryptocurrencies for years, citing financial risks. According to Russian media, FSB assumes that they can be used to finance “foreign agents” and opposition.

Central Bank made funny statements about crypto being a threat to national currency and another way for capital to flow from Russia. Well, they should then ban Kremlin and personally Putin.

It is clear that Kremlin aims not that much the opposition which doesn’t exist, but regular Russians who are involved in crypto business.

The point is to completely freeze the country.
The security guarantees that Russia seeks from the West include provisions requiring NATO forces to leave Romania and Bulgaria, the Russian foreign ministry said today.

Russia’s oldmen are out of their mind, and Bunker Putin is going to start the war. Well, let it be, if they want to.

Kremlin’s moves are that of Nozdrev from Russian classic novel. Maybe, Kremlin will insist on America leaving NATO? They should give it a try.
The crypto ban of Bank of Russia looks really strange.

Top-managers of the Bank, as well as Russian feudal elites – top siloviks of FSB, MVD etc, people from Kremlin – are heavily involved in cryptobusiness and traffic of money in it.

The Bank made yesterday some awkward moves that didn’t go unnoticed. One of its employees said that the annual bonus of the Bank’s finance department depends on how often it is mentioned in the media.

According to other reports, Nabiullina got angry with the message about FSB influencing her decisions. Some controversial statements followed about the ban being not complete etc.

It all ended up with gazeta.ru publishing a text about the whole deal being an attempt of the Bank to attract some media attention. What?

The text disappeared from gazeta.ru afterwards, but what are these people doing?
Novyi Vek assumes that in case of severe economic sanctions against Russia the US will also put itself in a bad spot because “money from Russia” won’t flow into American economy.

We are hearing fairy tales about “national capital” since Crimea, but the outflow of capital from Russia hasn’t ever stopped.

To your point about Russian money being something substantial for the US economy – of course it’s not true. America is a giant, Russia is more of a lightweight. Our economies do not have that close ties.

As a matter of fact, the GDP of each of the three American states – California, New York and Texas – is higher than Russian.

Kremlin is ruining Russian economy, stock index and currency with his military activities and other bad decisions.

We do not see any negative outcome of this whole deal for the US, as well as positive for Russia.
Russia added Alexei Navalny and several of his top aides to the country’s “terrorists and extremists” register.

At the same time, a documentary about poisoning of Navalny will be premiered today at the Sundance Festival.

After a failed attempt to kill Navalny (which is still furiously denied in Russia) Kremlin jailed him and blacklisted as an extremist and terrorist. Perhaps it’s not even the worst case scenario compared to the killers who failed to kill him.

Regardless of Navalny’s personality, Putin’s Russia was described a long time ago by George Orwell.
President Joe Biden told Vladimir Putin that the United States would deploy thousands of troops to Eastern Europe if Russia continues its military buildup along Ukraine’s border or mounts a renewed invasion of the country.

Putin might be a good tactician, but he always was a poor strategist. One implication of his chaotic Ukranian moves is a partial revival of NATO.

A couple of years ago many thought that NATO is done. The Alliance was in crisis, especially during Trump’s presidency.

Now it’s all on, largely thanks to Russia playing the game he cannot win. Although many in Washington already see Moscow as China’s proxy.
Anthony Blinken is giving a press conference about the response to the ridiculous Russian ultimatum, delivered today to the Foreign Ministry by Ambassador Sullivan.

The message of Blinken is clear: it's up to Russia now, we are ready either way.

The whole deal is turning into a farce for Putin.
Interesting thing about Russian public reaction to the yesterday’s response to its demands is that high-ranked public speakers like Medvedev and Dzhabarov are referring to China while discussing it.

Medvedev said that NATO’s actions pose in Ukraine pose a threat also to China. Dzhabarov added that Russia will have some discussions with Beijing while evaluating its further actions.

Help us, big brother.
You can take Putin out of bunker, but nobody will ever be able to take bunker out of Putin.

President is walking on the grounds of the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery while the survivors of the blockade and other mourners look on from behind a fence.
A package of sanctions in case of aggression against Ukraine will include the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Germany's foreign minister Annalena Baerbock told the Bundestag.

Putin’s gas game with restricted supplies to Europe hasn’t been successful. Basically, Russia acted to the benefit of other suppliers, first of all American LNG companies.

Both Germany and France have been reluctant to fully support US in the Ukranian case for this reason also.

Could happen that Putin won’t give them any room to move.
