Because of her beauty, Irene got the nickname Baephrodite which is a combination of her surname Bae and the name of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite. Irene first debuted as a member of SM Entertainment's girl band Red Velvet in 2015. Besides Irene, Red Velvet is also fronted by Joy, Seulgi, Yeri, and Wendy.
