French President Emanuel Macron said in a phone call on Monday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and Ukrainian President Vlodomyer Zelensky that “There is a possibility that the U.S. will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without clarity on security guarantees,” according to the phone call’s transcript published by German magazine Der Spiegel, during which Merz expressed similar concern, saying that “They are playing games, both with you and with us,” referring to US President Trump’s Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who met with Russian President Putin the day before yesterday.
