🇺🇸🇸🇦 Analysis: Two weeks after US media circulated reports of a nearing deal to sell the advanced fifth-gen F-35 Lighting II fighter jet to Saudi Arabia, President Donald Trump confirmed the reports, during a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince in the Oval Office where they answered media questions.

Trump said that they’re “working on getting that approved very quickly,” Saudi Arabia is expected to buy as many as 48x F-35 jets, along with initial spare parts and spare engines, that could be worth $5.3-$5.7 billion, not including munitions or possible contractor logistics support. The kingdom could get F-35s more swiftly than foreign customers usually do: the US Air Force (USAF) is on record as saying it prefers to wait to buy large numbers of F-35s until the in-development Block 4 upgrade comes to fruition.

Its unknown whether the aircraft would be as powerful as the ones Israel possesses. Israel opposes such deal, but some say the Jewish country could agree if the Kingdom normalizes its relationships with Tel Aviv, but Israe’s Channel 12 reported that the US will not condition the sale on a relationship normalization. Asked in the Oval Office whether the jets would be as powerful as Israel’s, Trump said that he thinks “its gonna be pretty similar,” although the in 2008, Congress amended the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) to state that any arms sale “to any country in the Middle East other than Israel shall include a determination that the sale or export of the defense articles or defense services will not adversely affect Israel’s qualitative military edge over military threats to Israel.”

I think that it would definitely be lower in capabilities. Earlier Reuters reported that the Saudi F-35 jets would not have the next-gen AIM-260 air-to-air missiles, in addition to other advanced weapons and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems. Yet the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) submitted a formal position paper to Israel’s political echelon after the US-Saudi deal was announced, in which the Israeli Air Force (IAF) presented an explicit objection to the US’s sale of the F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia.
According to the document, Israel’s air superiority could be eroded if other countries in the Middle East possess the advanced stealth aircraft, a point over which Israel has expressed concern several times in the past. The timing of the deal announcement is interesting, and could be a message to Iran, the country which suffered enormous losses by the same jets operated by the IAF during the 12-Day War. It seems like a strategic flex aimed, now the Mullahs would be surrounded from two sides by F-35 fleets. Thats tough.
🇺🇸 The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has published its preliminary report on the crash of a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F that occurred on November 4 in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to the report, taxi and takeoff were normal. However, during rotation, the aircraft’s left engine (No. 1) detached from the wing along with its pylon. Airport surveillance video of the airplane showed the engine, on fire, passing over the fuselage before hitting the ground.

A fire also broke out at the pylon attachment point on the wing and continued until the aircraft crashed.
