🇺🇸🇮🇶 The Pentagon has withdrawn 500 troops from Iraq, positioning most of the remaining ones in the north in al-Harir Air Base.

Some of the forces will stay in Baghdad for bilateral agreements not related to countering ISIS. There will be less than 2000 troops in total, and most of them will shift to counter ISIS in Syria from Iraq.

🇺🇸 Three US Navy (USN) P-8A “Poseidon” Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Maritime patrol aircraft, departed from Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, are airborne in Europe, with one of them returning from the Black Sea, as NATO’s Eastern flank witnesses Russian drone infiltrations in recent weeks.
🇫🇷🇷🇺 Special Operations Forces of the French Navy intercepted a Benin-flagged oil tanker (IMO 9332810) of Russia’s “Shadow Fleet”, dubbed “Borocay”, off the coast of the western French port of Saint-Nazaire, where it hosts Naval Bases.

Between 22 and 25 Sept., the same vessel, under a new name, was spotted near Copenhagen, Denmark, at a time when the local airport of the city suspended operations because of a drone threat, and its now suspected of launching the drones just as Ukraine’s Zelensky said earlier.

The vessel left the Russian port of Primorsk, near Saint Petersburg, on 20 September, and was en route to India to deliver oil before being intercepted by France.
🇮🇷 For unknown reasons, most Iranian-flagged tankers are now transmitting properly over AIS without spoofing; for the first time in seven and a half years. This change began today, with two AIS data providers confirming this.

FDD Senior fellow, Behnam Ben Taleblu: 3 potential reasons for this historic change:

- Tehran (& a cast of ultra-hardliners in particular) may be tempting/testing the West to enforce sanctions post-SnapBack & be looking for a casus belli for escalation in response. Aka come and get them.

- Tehran may genuinely hope the move is (mis)read as goodwill that leads to sanctions atrophy rather than economic escalation in a post 12-Day War, SnapBack & Gaza ceasefire environment allowing illicit but recognized exports to allow the regime to limp along.

- Tehran may be responding to other shipping related pressures, like the Aug 2025 move by Malaysia against STS transfers, offshore anchorage & turning off transponders.
