🔸 Farin Kamangar, Bio:
Dr. Farin Kamangar is a University Distinguished Professor and Assistant Vice President for Research at Morgan State University, a Historically Black University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Dr. Kamangar is an epidemiologist and has been the author or coauthor of over 250 peer-reviewed articles, which have been cited over 30,000 times. He has published many papers in prestigious journals, such as BMJ, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, among others. He has also served the principal investigator (PI) of over $50 million of NIH grants.
Dr. Kamangar is a proud graduate of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), where he received his MD and MPH. He was admitted to TUMS in 1987 (1366) after ranking #1 in the Entrance Examinations of the Iranian Universities (Konkoor). While studying at TUMS, he was one of the founders of the Students’ Scientific Research Center (SSRC), where he taught research methodology to nearly 2000 medical students and residents. He also traveled to many other Iranian university to teach research methodology. Many outstanding and talented students who participated in his workshops later became prominent researchers. For his contributions to the SSRC, TUMS established the “Farin Kamangar Prize”, which is annually awarded to a student with major research accomplishments.
In 1999 (1378), Dr. Kamangar joined Professor Reza Malekzadeh’s team to prepare for conducting epidemiologic studies in the Golestan Province of Iran. He later pursued further training in Epidemiology (PhD) and Biostatistics (MHS) at Johns Hopkins University. When studying at Johns Hopkins in the early 2000s, he simultaneously served as a researcher at the US National Cancer Institute, working closely with Dr. Malekzadeh, Dr. Dawsey, Dr. Abnet and other team leaders who launched a series of epidemiological studies to assess the risk factors of chronic diseases in the Golestan Province. Dr. Kamangar had a pivotal role in drafting the proposals for these studies, training doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, and analyzing and publishing many of the papers that resulted from this international collaboration. Dr. Kamangar made major contributions to the recognition of opium as a carcinogen by the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He has served as one of the principal investigator (PI) of the Golestan Cohort Study for the past 12 years.
After joining Morgan State University in 2009 (1388), Dr. Kamangar received over $40 million of grant funding from the NIH to enhance the diversity of biomedical research workforce (especially African Americans), train faculty members to become more competitive in receiving grants, and enhance the research infrastructure of the university. Dr. Kamangar also served as the Executive Director of another $15 million award from the NIH, entitled RCMI at Morgan, the aim of which was to reduce health disparities.
Dr. Kamangar has given over 50 invited talks, including talks at Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins School of Public, and the IARC. He has served on national and international boards, including as a member of National Board of Public Health Examiners, and two IARC Working Groups. For his academic accomplishments, Dr. Kamangar has received 22 professional awards, including the NIH Merit Award and the NCI Director’s Innovation Award.

President of CGC2024
The first International Cancer Genomics Congress (CGC2023) was held in May 2023 at the Iran International Conference Center. The congress was organized by a consortium of national scientific societies in collaboration with the Italian Society of Biophysics and Molecular Biology (SIBBM). In the first congress, we successfully established the necessary infrastructure for the Cancer Genomics Network in the country. This was made possible with the support and participation of over 25 scientific societies related to cancer, 110 student associations, medical and research centers, diagnostic laboratories, insurance companies, investors, startups, science-based companies, and health charities. In this regard, our aim was to leverage the potential of all these players to develop comprehensive, evidence-based solutions for managing cancer in the country. Fortunately, with the establishment of the Cancer Genomics Network and the strong presence of scientific societies, research, and clinical centers in the country, the potential for achieving maximum attendance of the congress audience was guaranteed.
I am proud to once again serve the scientific and clinical community of the country as the President of the Cancer Genomics Congress. The CGC2024 Congress will be held with a focus on three key areas: science, commercialization, and social responsibility, similar to the previous congress. In the upcoming congress, the presence of representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Health Economics will provide a unique opportunity for specialized engagement in the pharmaceutical and clinical sectors. It will also facilitate collaboration with the private sector in developing laws, regulations, and implementing programs and policies. Consequently, this will contribute to the advancement of cancer research in the field of medicine.
In the realm of commercialization, there has been ongoing support for startups focused on molecular diagnosis and targeted therapy. It is anticipated that the 12 startups that were recruited in the previous congress, hosted by the Techazma accelerator, will now enter the production phase. The initiative to attract and support new ideas and startups in the field of cancer at the upcoming congress will be pursued with greater determination, aiming to secure support from government institutions and private sector investors.
In the realm of social responsibility, a meaningful collaboration was established with the National Health Charity Network during the previous congress, and this partnership will be further strengthened in the upcoming congress. The Social Responsibility Working Group has placed cancer prevention campaigns and the promotion of community health knowledge on their agenda. In order to maximize our involvement in cancer-related charities, Health Charity Network will play a more prominent role in the upcoming Congress.
In the CGC2024 Congress, two new programs are being planned under the titles of "Student Festival" and "From Idea to Startup Festival" with the aim of promoting cancer science and entrepreneurship to high school and university students.
With the active presence of genomics laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, knowledge-based companies, and commercial-industrial companies in this congress, it is important to foster collaboration among all stakeholders involved in the nation's cancer ecosystem.
