Groundhog Day

One of the most famous of all Animal Cults is the "Cult of Groundhogism" practiced by the Pennsylvania Dutch in honor of their totem animal The Groundhog, The Seer of Seers the Prognosticator of Prognosticators!
Centered around an eternal Groundhog spirit and originally honored with a Groundhog hunt and feast. Nowadays that weather predicting groundhog is much more popular with the world famous Punxsutawney Phil as the focal point of the Holy Day. He has an inner circle of sacred caretakers, a brotherhood of venerators, and year round care with people who love him and care for him.

While much of the holy day is tongue-in-cheek, the Groundhog Lodges where PA Dutch men go is much less so, swearing themselves in as "Baby Groundhogs" and swearing before an Idol of the King Groundhog to always protect and even lay down their lives for the Groundhog.-TLK

Hunters:

Yes hunters are quite often Animal Cultists coming to appreciate and understand their quarry in ways the more domestic of men simply cannot.
Not only do they wish to continue hunting and so even through self interest wish to preserve the animal they constantly observe not only the animal numbers but their habits and habitat noting their condition.
Teddy Roosevelt a noted Big Games Man was not only an avid conservationist helping regulate hunting practices but also set up the American National Parks we enjoy today preserving them for future generations.
A tradition still carried on by Hyperborean Hunters to this day -CG

Karhunpeijaiset & The Finnish Bear Cult

In Finland the Bear Cult is one of the oldest and most prolific parts of the Finnish ethnic faith. The Bear is seen as a divine ancestor and even has a Bear god who was once a man, Otso. The Bear was also seen as a divine being created by Mielikki from gathered stars, when a bear is angry and violent the song of their creation by the goddess is sung to remind the bear it is a kind creature.

The hunting of a bear is also an important tradition with many customs attached, after a successful hunt a traditional feast or Karhunpeijaiset is held. The bears skull is hung atop a pine tree in a sacred grove facing Ursa Major and fish were hung on the branches as a gift. The Bear would return to its afterlife in the stars a land of rivers and forests and then return to mankind. The importance of bears is such, that an Alternative Kalevala (The Finnish Epic Mythology) is being planned right now, with a focus on Bear Cults.-TLK

In honor of Steve Irwin:

Steve is probably the most famous and prolific of animal cultists in our lifetime. While his death was unfortunate it was not unexpected by anyone including himself, his wife or his children. Everyone knew it was fated, the only question being when and how.
In the video in which he was struck through the heart by the barb of the Ray his concern was for the animal and that people might come to hate or fear Rays.

He spent his life bringing animals into the minds and hearts of people to dispel the irrational fear of animals everywhere not just his native Australia. Coexistence was his goal. His love for both people and animals was evident in how he lived his life with open excitement, curiosity and nurturing personality.

We thank Steve and his Family for all of their sacrifice which his children and widow are continuing in his name. -CG

The Icebergs by Frederic Edwin Church 1861

What is a Sea Cultist?

The Sea calls to all, for some it is a nightmare of mysteries, others untold adventures to be had. It comes with its own mythology, its own way of being, but the sea is not just the sea, it is the rivers, the lakes, the ponds, the rain and the blood flowing in the veins.

Its lapping waves call us to adventure, its depths taunt us with its unlimited mysteries, the very stars shimmer atop its depths whispering to the ghosts of the past, unable to be tamed, unable to be fully known, many a man, woman, and child has crossed its eldritch depths; many have sunken down to Davy Jones Locker, and many more will do so.
The sea is the lifesblood, the veins and highways of the world calling nay... luring us with its siren songs to know its' untold secrets, to seek out new lands. In every lapping wave, in every sunken skull, every drop of rain we hear its humming tune "Come to the sea" it sings, and we have never been one to disappoint her.

Fishermen

Fisherman are the most blatant of sea cultists, yet it is not only the deep sea fisherman with miles of nets and island sized trolleys. The humble fly fisherman or the boisterous BIG BASSMAN, the fresh water clam, crawdads, turtle hunter and the noodler, these too are harvesters of sea life.
Ask any great or less than great fishermen and they will gladly inform you that you must know and understand the quarry you seek and a little dumb luck never hurt but more than all of that you must love the act of fishing if you are to successfully play the ultimate game of life and death (at least for the fish).
Many a fisherman has been caught praying to the gods of the lake and stream, the caretaker and guardian of the little fishies asking for just one worthy of showing off to friends and families alike. Many remember Dad, Grandfather or an Uncle who were avid fishermen taking us fishing for the first time. Happy to simply be on the water. - CG

The Klabautermann Soul of the Ship

The Klabautermann is a Fae, Kobold, Ancestral Spirit, God or Goblin depending on who you ask that resides upon ships in German folklore. In many traditions he is the soul of the ship itself or the tree that was used to make the ship.
The Klabautermann is often depicted with a beard, pipe, woolen hat, raincoat and a hammer that he uses to fix up the ship he is a part of. Sailors keep an idol of their Klabautermann tied to one of the masts thanking him for his hard work. If his hard work was ignored he would play pranks on the crew.
As the soul of the ship, if the ship was well cared for the Klabautermann would bring good luck to the crew even helping keep the ship afloat or speaking to the sea on their behalf.
If a Klabautermann left the ship it would lose all its luck and sink.

They typically hang out near the Prow of the Ship and are unseen most of the time, some say they are only able to be seen when a ship is near its doom. -TLK

The Great Lakes

Sea battles are most often imagined on the high seas with the likes of Black Beard and The Irish Pirate Queen but! This is not always so. The Great Lakes are so large they were and still should be dubbed inland seas. Great seas of sweet water so vast they escape beyond the horizon and so deep as to crush the very soul from the man foolish enough to doubt their power!
The Great Lakes are not merely glorified mud puddles, no... indeed they are far more and many a raging sea battle was waged upon their waters. Merchant fleets and fishermen have long made their living of her many backs. Logs have been floated upon these waters forming great barges floated to the Ocean and further!
Many a man has met his doom under her waves taken down by the clawing embrace of deadly undertows. Lake Superior even refusing to surrender her dead!
So perhaps in her loving and murderous embrace you might discover that the sea calls to you.- CG

Gifts for the Lady

You have likely heard of the Lady of the Lake, yet have you felt her call?

Have you seen the sparkling fountain?

The smooth waves upon the shore?

The Bewitching glow of the sun upon the surface?

"Throw it" she says, "throw your sorrow, your grief, the weight, throw it to me and I shall keep it safe for those yet to come"

How many have thrown a coin, a ring, a watch, a sword? To the Lady of the Lake. Her soft touch easing the pain and weight upon the heart. In her embrace the weight unburdens itself, and she carries forth the wedding rings, the broken hearts, the sword, the weight of war, she takes it and keeps it safe among the guppies and the pebbles. Until it is needed once more, when two hearts become one, when war is at our door, when the Bear King walks the earth. We give it all to her, the beloved Lady of the Lake.-TLK
