What is an Animal Cultist?
Animals are an integral part of life, in fact we ourselves are animals; phenomenal animals! Yet the Animal Cult is one of the most misunderstood and prolific of all the cults. One can see continuations in language, culture and beyond.
So what is it?
While there are many ways that one could be an animal cultist they all have one thing in common. One must understand the animal on a fundamental level, to a level that one might be called insane by the populace. Animal Cultists will live not only with but like the animal, mimicking and learning its behavior so that their very spirit seems to become that of the animal!
A less extreme form may be the naturalists, conservationists & catalogers. Using this understanding to teach people about animals via understanding how both man and fauna can coexist. Preventing extinctions, keeping healthy environments and the harmony of the natural environment not separate of man but together with man.

Maine Lobstermen
In Maine and parts of the Northeastern States Lobster Fishing is a traditional and incredibly important industry. Due to the nature of Lobsters though there are incredibly important rules and traditions followed. These require an understanding of the Lobsters life cycle, habits and behavior on a deep level to be able to properly trap for Lobsters.
Unlike other fishing industries, Lobster Fishing has remained largely small scale and family oriented with the various fisherman enforcing their own code of conduct such as limiting the number of Lobsters one can take or as seen in the above video marking breeding females to be unable to be kept.
Lobsters can live over a hundred years being effectively immortal, only dying when they become too big to molt. As such a properly tended environment and population of Lobsters can feed people indefinitely but it requires understanding, genuine care and respect for these delicious buttery crustaceans.

The Animal Witch Simona Kossak
Simona Kossak was a Polish biologist and animal advocate. Living in a house in the forest with both a lynx that slept in her bed and a friendly crow named Korasek that would often terrorize and steal from people; taking car keys, money, permits, and attacking people walking or riding bikes. Though if he dared steal from friends she would chastise and even threaten the bird.
Her interactions and care for animals would lead to many of them being loyal friends with her. One such animal was Żabka a rather large female boar Simona had raised since she was a day old, Żabka walked beside her and guarded her not unlike a dog, even asking her for pets and rubs.
She also had a herd or "Pack" of deer that she cared for and who would follow her around. She was a staunch advocate of animals fighting to defend the Lynxes, Wolves, etc of Poland's oldest forests. This odd life style led many calling her a witch.
In many ways she was like those of Yore.-TLK

Bern Bear as Ancestor and God
One of the oldest Animal cults in the world is the Bear Cult of Bern, though Bern itself is not an ancient city. The Bear cult that permeates the entire culture is.

An entire culture spawned from observing, interacting with and knowing the Bear. From medicine and cuisine to martial arts and architecture, the Bear Cult reigns supreme in Bern, Switzerland.

Arcadian Werewolves
One of the most famous examples of Therianthropy are the myths of Arcadian Werewolves. Arcadia was infamous for its Wolf based legends including Lycaon a cultural hero who was turned into a wolf. While Zeus was also commonly venerated in wolf form in many areas in early Grecian tradition.
One tradition of the Arcadians that ties into this Lycan metamorphosis is told in bits and pieces through Greek mythology. It is said that the Arcadians would go to a pond or river, take off their clothes hanging them on a nearby tree branch then swimming across the body of water they would go to live (or "turn into") a wolf for nine years. They would live with and as a wolf under the strict rule of Never Harming a Human while doing so.
After the trial period they would then return with the knowledge gained living as a wolf, bringing it back to their people to help them remain true to their own nature. -TLK

One of the most famous of all Animal Cults is the "Cult of Groundhogism" practiced by the Pennsylvania Dutch in honor of their totem animal The Groundhog, The Seer of Seers the Prognosticator of Prognosticators!
Centered around an eternal Groundhog spirit and originally honored with a Groundhog hunt and feast. Nowadays that weather predicting groundhog is much more popular with the world famous Punxsutawney Phil as the focal point of the Holy Day. He has an inner circle of sacred caretakers, a brotherhood of venerators, and year round care with people who love him and care for him.
While much of the holy day is tongue-in-cheek, the Groundhog Lodges where PA Dutch men go is much less so, swearing themselves in as "Baby Groundhogs" and swearing before an Idol of the King Groundhog to always protect and even lay down their lives for the Groundhog.-TLK
