Forwarded from The American Spirit
The woods were made for the hunter of dreams,
The brooks for the fishers of song;
To the hunters who hunt for the gunless game,
The streams and the woods belong.
There are thoughts that moan from the soul of pine
And thoughts in a flower bell curled;
And the thoughts that are blown with scent of the fern
Are as new and as old as the world.

"Pagan Aesthetics"

The Pagans of today have unfortunately become defined less by disposition or deed and more by décor.

Most of you are probably aware of what I'm talking about.
-
We get tattoos we didn't earn.

Claim titles we don't deserve.

Venerate Gods we have no business looking towards.

Buy and wear meaningless baubles because they have pagan symbols.

All culminating in what comes off like grown ups going through a rebellious phase heavily influenced by D&D.
-
There is nothing wrong with wishing to be a Witch, but a Witch is not defined by her hat and broom but by her wisdom and her craft. The Craft of caring for their community, of tending to the sick and the ailing, of solving disputes and making the hard often painful decisions.

There is nothing wrong with getting a Pagan Tattoo, but an unearned one is tantamount to stolen valor. The kind that in the right circles should that tattoo truly mean something would have a fraud flayed.

There is nothing wrong with venerating the Gods, or appreciating Gods of other Tribes. But Pagan means ethnic, to venerate the Pagan Gods is to venerate the Gods of your people. You do not venerate the Gods of your ancestors as an Irishman by placing Greek Gods in a place of honor. Why would they bother with you?

There is nothing wrong with clothes or possessions, but wearing unlimited bangles and swag with random pagan imagery does nothing but issue a cry for help.
-
You cannot Purchase Paganism.

No amount of hollow ritual, expensive idols. rehearsed words or pagan symbols can make up for the disingenuous nature of one's intent.

We are not like the other belief systems, we are older, we are wiser, we are the adults in the room.

But we have to act like it. Not just "look" like it.

Folk Christianity

The Religion most people follow is not Christianity; it is Folk Christianity, there is a massive difference. This is why arguments against Christianity fall on deaf ears.

So... What is this Christianity?

I'm sure there are many opinions to this ranging from "The One True Religion" to "A Plague Upon this Earth!" but those are both relatively pointless delineations that don't say anything about the daily lives and reasons people have for taking part in such a religion. Many of us who have looked into the religion see what "The Church" has done and are rightfully infuriated over it. Some others may dig far enough back to wonder if it didn't find its genesis as a Philosophy akin to Stoicism or Cynicism so prevalent in the Greek World. Yet in truth none of that matters.

The Reason?

No one cares.

That's not "their Christianity" and this is the truth. Christianity as some overarching one true religion doesn't exist and no one has ever practiced it. When Pagans, Atheists, or any other religion attack Christianity whether it is for historic actions or biblical inaccuracies we are not perceived as attacking "The Church" or "Christianity" we are perceived as attacking the Family and Friends of the Christian in question.

This may seem an irrational conclusion but people have never been rational but emotional. For hundreds of years we have been considered "Christian" regardless of the truth, evident in the sheer amount of heathen and pagan customs it has been repeated often enough to be perceived as truth. Attacking Christianity is perceived as attacking the Christmas Season, Easter Dinner, Uncle Toby's folk songs around the fire, guardian angels, Grandma's First Communion gifts, and their parents wedding ceremony not the Church and it's apparatus but the individual folk religions and treasured memories therein.

Attacking the Bible is pointless as no "Christian" actually reads it. Attacking the Church and the Priests are pointless, at least towards the individual because they are already disliked in general and merely tolerated as a perceived necessity by the average "Christian". It is not uncommon for cries of "We've Always Been Christian" or "God and Jesus have Nothing to do with Christianity" to rise up from people when cornered their eyes panicked at the perceived attack not on some savior or religious institution but their family and their community.

The reality is they are not lying when they say "God and Jesus have Nothing to do With Christianity" or "We've always been Christian" perhaps not in the literal sense but what they "perceive" as Christianity. Which is the Folk Customs and Beliefs therein. Ancestral Spirits, Yuletide Ghosts, Woodland Critters Placing Eggs in Baskets, Folk Songs, Bonfires, Bonding Ceremonies and Rites of Passage are all Incredibly Old and this is what many consider Christian. The reality is unimportant as the emotional association is that Christianity=Home, Family, Heritage and Community. Almost everything they like or care about is some variation of Old European Ethnic Customs and Beliefs so prevalent and treasured in the folk religion. With dying "Christians" crying "I am Going to See My Family" which in the end of ones life is all that matters. They are willing to deny both Heaven and Hell to be with their loved ones once again and God be damned!

An attack on Christianity is a perceived attack on family both living and dead. A hurdle once experienced by the Church while facing Heathens has now become one in the opposite direction. Because in the end the only thing that makes people leave the Church if they have found peace and community there, is when the Church is perceived as the greater threat to that community.

As always spirituality whether the Old Gods of Our People or the Church's Creations the people come first. To place a threat on them is to find yourself at war with the people, even the Church has never been immune to this.

So What can we do? Use the Soft Touch.
