The Legend of Santa Claus
"Born in the Yuletide in times long past some say he is a spirit, others a forest god, some say he is a man of flesh and blood just as you or I. He is all of these and more. Many of us grew up hearing the stories of a Jolly Old Elf riding across the sky and flying down the chimney delivering gifts from his endless sack of toys, children filled with Christmas glee would leave cookies and milk, tobacco and carrots all for this Christmas gift giver. Yet his story is much much more told bit by bit over the centuries his myth as rich as any other.
In the genesis of his tale he walked door to door across the snowy landscape, stars in the sky, breath frozen in the raging blizzards. A Yule Log or tree strapped to his back and an ax hanging from his side. He was alone. A Yuletide traveler stopping place to place with gifts, for he was a toy-maker adorned in rich furs and smelling of pipe tobacco. Some children greeted him with joyful smiles others with cries of terror as they would be spirited away never to see their families again while they toiled among his Elves. Other times he held the reins of a horse or stag much like other ghosts of the Parade of Spirits. He was on foot or on hoof and following him were the winds of winter, frost and snow freezing the cobblestone paths and windows he passed. His abode like others of German and American myth was a great castle, it appeared out of no....".-Excerpt from The Origins of Santa Claus by I.M Knosp

How Old is The Snowman?
When or Why did we first make him?
A mirror of ourselves made of downy snow? An instinctive action, an instinctive veneration; for Good Old Mr. Snowman.
Long before the coming of the Church, Snowmen were built in the dawn and dusk of Winter with children's songs of innocent glee.
They sang when he was made, they sang when he was dressed but most of all they sang when he banished away disease and weary days.
The Church did their best to snuff him out, this Frosty Man, This Jolly Happy Soul, with his smoking pipe, button nose and his eyes made out of deep black coal. They set bonfires to melt their competition, they smashed him prematurely.
Despite their best efforts it is of no consequence for he'll be back again some day. He'll play with the children rough as wild cubs, then when fell apart before his pure snow may be blemished, freed to fall again as Winter's restful blanket.
They'll never win, for the Snowman is old, older than we know. From the Front Yards of Midwestern Children, To being thanked for ridding families of the black plague with a circle dance and a grim and joyous "Ring Around The Rosy", to the cold cold Winters of the Long Long Ago. On and on eternally he is so comfortable, so bright, so merry.
So the real question?

Lovers in a Sleigh by Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski
"Giddy-yap giddy-yap giddy-yap it's grandJust holding your hand
We're gliding along with the song
Of a wintry fairy land
Our cheeks are nice and rosy
And comfy cozy are we
We're snuggled up together like two
Birds of a feather would be
Let's take the road before us
And sing a chorus or two
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you
There's a birthday party at the home of Farmer Gray
It'll be the perfect ending of a perfect day
We'll be singing the songs we love to sing without a single stop
At the fireplace while we watch the chestnuts pop
Pop! Pop! Pop!"-Sleigh Ride

Winter Solstice by Hermann Vogel 1905
Dear Winter, Thank You for all your gifts. For the long night with its stars and moon that shine their soft subtle glow.
For the downy blanket you spread across the land, allowing rest and peace to our tender Wintersleep.
For the time with Kin that we treasure so. For the aid in hunts to keep our bellies full.
For your watchful hand that blocks out pestilence and plague. For the Songs we sing and games we play.
For all these gifts and more Dear Winter we thank you so. And while many may not see the myriad of gifts you give to us free.
Our gratitude does not waver, for your chill sparkling splendor.
Happy Winter Solstice and May Winter be all that you need.
Love,

Hunter's Moon
Have you heard of the Hunter's Moon?
The Hunter's Moon is not a Scheduled Moon, it's not even necessarily a Full Moon. The Hunter's Moon is a Hunter's Moon because it is so bright it lights up the night.
Thus when combined with Winter's Glittering Snow the Hunter's Moon crafts a day nocturne. In the Den of Winter tracking is easy in the snow while daylight leads to Snow Blindness, it is in this time the Moonlit Hunt becomes a treasured event.
The Hunter, the Woodsman, the Parent with mouths to feed, the Hermit, stomachs growling for their next meal all go out into the light of the Hunter's Moon. Whether by snowshoe or pick up truck, alone or in a party this Hunt is something special.
The antler of the Stag glitters in the night, hoofprints following like sunken memories and should they escape your keen eyes one can always follow the Blood Upon the Snow.
So the real question... Have you enjoyed the Moonlit Hunt?

An Honest Question
It doesn't really matter how you returned to ethnic faith, the real question is why do you remain in ethnic faith?
Presenting these ideas needs a little more work but basically finding paganism via the Vikings TV show, Disney's Hercules or Faerie illustrations are all valid ways of returning to ethnic faith. However I would argue they are not reasons to stay in it.
If someone has found ethnic faith but has found nothing but aesthetics or subculture I would have to ask why they remain? Not out of some hooty tooty ivory tower way but out of genuine curiosity. You can have and enjoy Norse, Greek, Celtic etc. mythology without being pagan I meet "Lovers of Mythology" on a regular basis. One does not need to be pagan to enjoy these things.
Our Ethnic Way is inherently well.. ethnic, one venerates the people the gods are for lack of a better term "The Divine Wing" it is not a competing religion with Christianity. We are not the Burger King to their McDonald's. We are the home cooked meal!
This is why we write so often on our nature whether biological, spiritual or mental, with posts on spirits, gods and customs peppered in-between.
Our lore is too vast to ever fit in a book. There is no One True Choice in our gods, there is no doctrine, no dogma. But there is as is evident in nature a code of conduct. I can no more list what it is than tell you what Thor ate for Lunch last Tuesday if he ate anything at all. But we know when it is broken. A man who kills another may be hailed as a murderer or a hero, a thief may be a savior or a saboteur, an old woman a wise treasured matriarch or a despised wicked woman.
Sometimes kindness is a warm cup of coffee and a smile sometimes it is tears and a bullet to the head.
Sometimes destroying a town is brutality other times cruelty.
We know when this code these guidelines are broken.
Whatever your tribe (Wendish, Scottish, Basque, etc) whatever your current home (America, Europe, Oceania, etc) you have OUR Ethnic Way OUR Old Gods.
There were a lot of jumbled up ideas that I didn't want to lose so they ended up in this complete mess of a post.
Sincerely With Love,

The Keeper of the Ways by Neale "Aethelwulf" Rundgren 2022
This work of art features a fictionalized depiction of The Lore Keeper beside an Otherworldly Stag. This was truly a wonderful and unexpected gift created especially for me by my good friend Neale "Aethelwulf" Rundgren!-
I am incredibly touched that Wulf made this for me and am especially honored to see how he views me. A piece truly possessing such dark and stark beauty. I could explain the different elements he included and why but really I just want to thank him for this wonderful artwork and thought to share its magnificence with other people so that they too might witness the amazing work my friend Wulf can accomplish with his hard won skills.
Thanks Again Wulfman and Glad Yule. -TLK

"Polar Bear himself was astonished when I brought light; for the most remarkable thing is that the walls of these caves are all covered with pictures, cut into the rock or painted on in red and brown and black.
Some of them are very good (mostly of animals), and some are queer and some bad; and there are many strange marks, signs and scribbles, some of which have a nasty look, and I am sure have something to do with black magic.
Cave Bear says these caves belong to him, and have belonged to him or his family since the days of his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great (multiplied by ten) grandfather; and the bears first had the idea of decorating the walls, and used to scratch pictures on them on soft parts- it was useful for sharpening the claws.
Then Men came along-Imagine it! Cave Bear says there were lots about at one time, long ago, when the North Pole was somewhere else. (That was long before my time, and I have never heard old Grandfather Yule mention it even, so I don't know if he is talking nonsense or not)."
