was tagged in some instagram stories today, so i decided to check it out at the same time, it’s been a long while since i’ve used instagram, hence i decided to scroll through some instagram stories of my followings was reminded of why i left instagram in…
just went back on instagram to check out what's going on on the platform

lo and behold, i could NOT find a single friend's post in the first ~15 posts on my feed (about 4-5 thumb scrolls worth)

i was just fed with reels from influencers and ads that i can't give a damn about

social media isn't social anymore

i don't care about what influencers are posting

short social media, long micro communities and niches

reminds me of what i said months ago:

social media isn't social anymore! only 7% of time spent on instagram in 2025 is spent on viewing content from friends.
don't forget this user study by meta on instagram in 2025

only 7% of time spent on instagram is spent on viewing content form friends

a convergence of taste, humour, entertainment, and trends

stand out by curating your own niche/taste and standing by it

let people find you, instead of you finding and turning to mimetic tastes

“My last post was in 2017,” says Maahi Gilder, a 24-year-old brand manager at Glitters Hardware, who claims she’s chronically online despite having no visible Instagram presence. “I love watching and sharing Reels. I actually run my company’s social media too. I’m everywhere except my own profile,” she shares cheerfully as though she’s hacked the system: maximum entertainment, minimum exposure. It wasn’t always like this. When Gilder was younger, she had a wholesome feed and only got rid of all her posts when she was starting university. “I didn’t want new people to be able to judge me within three seconds,” she says. “Instagram profiles sometimes feel like a résumé that you know people are going to come and stalk.”

this gradual change of consumer behaviour wasn't expected at the start of social platforms

i'll always find human behaviour so fascinating and i believe that it'll remain a wildcard saving grace into our dystopian AI future

we are trying to peer into the future rationally, but a bulk of human decisions are irrational

(think squidgame 3 ending)

maybe the herd decides to pushback in unity eventually, who knows

believe the future will never be as good or bad as people think, it'll probably settle somewhere inbetween while the pendulum continues to swing

this article is good in presenting the wisdom of the crowds through Galton's Ox:
https://sorenarchive.xyz/articles/the-price-of-truth

The wisdom of crowds is famously illustrated by the 1907 story of Galton's ox, where statistician Francis Galton analyzed nearly 800 guesses for the weight of an ox at a county fair. While individual estimates varied widely, ranging from informed opinions to wild guesses, the final average of the entire crowd was 1,197 pounds, which was remarkably just one pound off the actual weight. This phenomenon demonstrates that a diverse collective can produce a near-perfect answer because individual biases and errors cancel each other out, offering a final "measure of the middle".

Kegan’s Theory of Adult Development

However, most of us — about 65% of the general population — never become high functioning ‘adults’, i.e. we never make it past Stage 3 (out of 5 Stages!). We still lack an independent sense of self because so much of what we think, believe, and feel is dependent on how we think others experience us.

currently testing out WisprFlow for voice dictation came across heylemon today that looks pretty cool too, but seems early stage and i won't risk it as of yet starting to contemplate purchasing a second blank laptop just to try out new tech
not sure why wisprflow does this, but it has been happening often

i'm quite sure i speak decent english, but i'm getting malay transcripts from time to time

early tech issue? or maybe its my skill issue

interesting study on the fertility effect of permanent wage growth

TLDR:
Men’s wage increase -> extra income gets channeled into more food for the table, bigger/safer car, ability to support more kids =more children.

Women’s wage increase -> extra income funds personal consumption + raises the opportunity cost of time out for pregnancy+childcare = fewer children.
