An early look at the new Google watchfaces that will appear in the Pixel Watch 2.
Thanks to an anonymous source at Google, Android Authority has shown off the watchfaces that will appear in Google's second-gen watch. It is currently assumed that they will remain Pixel Watch 2 exclusive.
There will be 4 in total with different customization options:
• Accessible — includes 4 layouts: Circular, Linear, Stacked time, Just time.
• Arc — 3 time options (Max, Minimal and Digital) + 2 complications layouts (on the corners or top and bottom)
• Bold Digital — repeats one of the Android 14 watchfaces. Two layouts: Just Time and Radial.
• Analog Bold: Customize the number of complications (0 to 4). Customize date display, presence of dashes and rounding of numbers.
In addition, the Pixel Watch 2 will come with Wear OS 4, which can extract colours from the current watchface and apply them to the watch's UI.

Cinematic Wallpapers cannot yet run on Android 14. These wallpapers are based on two system apps: 'Cinematic Wallpaper' and 'Android System Intelligence'. The former is already pre-installed in Android 14, and the problem here is with the second app. …
You can now run Cinematic wallpapers on Android 14... if it's rolled out for you.
In early June, I posted that Cinematic wallpapers couldn't work on Android 14 yet because the pre-installed version of Android System Intelligence (ASI) didn't have the necessary service.
There's now a new version of ASI for Android 14 on APK Mirror that includes the required service. But that still doesn't mean that Cinematic wallpapers will appear for you, as the app of the same name has to download the models to the user data partition for that to happen. There's no way you can trigger the downloading of models, so it's just a matter of luck.
In the attached block diagram I have once again given how Cinematic wallpapers work (from my observations) .
The cinematic_wallpaper_warmup_completed ASI flag is responsible for the appearance of the button in the wallpaper picker, and it is activated only after downloading the models in Cinematic wallpapers app.

You may soon be able to "link your [Android] devices" signed into the same Google account together. This will enable "call switching", which lets you switch between devices for calls, as well as "Internet sharing"!
A new "Link Your Devices" menu will appear under Settings > Google > Devices & sharing once this rolls out. The call switching feature might be using the new Telecom Jetpack library that I previously talked about.

Stylus handwriting support is nearly ready to go live on the Pixel Tablet!
The Pixel Tablet, if you aren't aware, supports USI 2.0 styli. When you connect one to the tablet, you'll get the option to select a "default notes app" and "write in text fields".
Tapping "write in text fields" opens up Gboard's new stylus handwriting settings, where you can change the handwriting speed or handwriting stroke width.
You can also tap "try it" to open a text entry field where you can demo Gboard's new stylus handwriting gestures, including writing, deleting, selecting, inserting, joining words, and new line.
(The first screenshot in this post is from a tipster who actually has a Pixel Tablet and a USI 2.0 stylus. The remaining screenshots are from me, who doesn't have a Pixel Tablet so instead had to fake the config.)
Unfortunately, my tipster reports that, despite the fact that Gboard's stylus handwriting settings appears for him WITHOUT any modifications, it doesn't actually work. We may be missing some stylus handwriting library in the build or APK that's required, or possibly some feature flag needs to be toggled first.
Still, this shows that the feature is closer to launch than previously thought, when users were manually launching the
By the way, if you're wondering what the heck the "default notes app" is, check out my previous thread where I show a first look at the feature and explain how it works.

This is just my guess, but Google could launch a first-party stylus & keyboard accessory for the Pixel Tablet later this year.
Many features (improved keyboard shortcuts, notetaking role + AppClips API, stylus integration in Settings) just weren't ready for Android 13.

Follow-up: Here's a look at the settings page for this feature, which is apparently called "hold close to cast."
"Hold close to cast" will let you "reach your phone toward a Pixel Tablet to cast media."
"Your devices must be on the same private Wi-Fi network to cast. Not all media apps work with this feature."
This page will be found under Settings > Google > Devices & sharing > Cast options. The video I posted previously showed the promo for this feature.

Android's "Link Your Devices" settings may also add "instant hotspot" and "automatically share Wi-Fi" features, in addition to the previously spotted "call switching" and "Internet sharing" features.
As initially spotted by user @AssembleDebug, the latest version of the Google Play Services app has added new strings pertaining to these features.
1) "Instant hotspot": "Your devices can turn on this hotspot and connect whenever they need internet"
2) "Randomize name & password": "Prevents other devices from discovering your instant hotspot"
3) "Internet sharing": "Let your devices connect to your hotspot and Wi-Fi." "Internet sharing works with Chromebooks and Android devices signed in to your Google Account. Bluetooth needs to be on to share internet."
4) "Automatically share Wi-Fi": "Your nearby devices can connect to Wi-Fi without entering the password again"
5) (Previously seen) "Call switching": "Switch between devices for calls"
I personally think the features that the Cross-Device services/Nearby team is working on at Google are REALLY important for the future of Android. Ecosystem interoperability is one of the biggest strengths of Apple products, and it results in making it harder for users to switch from that ecosystem.
Google really needs to counter Apple's ecosystem with more cross-device features. I'm looking forward to seeing what the team there releases next!

Google Play Services is starting to roll out a big redesign of its settings page. I'm referring to the page you access by going to Settings > Google.
Now, instead of showing the full list of settings by default, you'll get quick access to a couple of key settings in the "recommended" tab. The "all services" tab houses the remaining settings.
I got this new UI after updating Google Play Services to version 23.33.14, but I only see it on one of my devices. Let me know if you see this new UI on your device - it's long overdue, IMO!

The September 2023 Android Feature Drop is here! The Android Feature Drop is a roundup of new features in Google apps. The latest drop brings an updated At a Glance widget, new Android Auto apps, and improvements to Lookout, Wallet, and Routines. Here's a 🧵 about what's new:
Because this ALWAYS causes confusion, no, this is NOT the same thing as the Pixel Feature Drop. The Pixel Feature Drop is for new Pixel-exclusive features, while the Android Feature Drop is for new features in Google apps that are available to all Android devices.
1) The Google App's At a Glance widget is getting a visual revamp and new features. The widget will surface helpful information like weather alerts, travel updates, and event reminders. (Note: this is not the same At a Glance widget found on Pixel devices.)
2) With image Q&A, now out of closed beta, the Lookout app can automatically generate descriptions from images that have low quality captions or that don't have alt text at all. Users can then use their voice or type to ask questions about the image.
Lookout also now supports 11 new languages, including Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, bringing the total number of supported languages to 34.
3) Google Wallet now supports Pass photo import, letting you digitize any pass that has a barcode or QR code. You can, for example, upload an image of your gym or library card to store a digital version of it in Google Wallet.
4) Apps for Zoom and Webex by Cisco are coming to Android Auto, letting you join conference calls by audio and browse your meeting schedules right from your car display.
5) You can now get Assistant to automatically read out your activity and sleep data (from Fitbit or Google Fit) through a new action in personal Routines. For example, you can add the "get wellness info" action to the "Hey Google, good morning" routine.
