Let me debunk the myth that thousands of Russian troops are leaving Syria to fight in Ukraine and that this is somehow a major disaster for Ukraine. Let’s break it down step by step.

Why Is This Not News?

First of all, this narrative isn’t exactly groundbreaking. The claim that Russian troops are returning from Syria to bolster their forces in Ukraine was predictable. It’s the kind of propaganda that fits neatly into the playbook of both Russian state media and certain “useful idiots.” It’s hardly a bolt from the blue or a five-alarm fire requiring immediate action. Frankly, it’s about as clever as high school-level counterpropaganda—nothing extraordinary.

But let’s not pat ourselves on the back just yet. Instead, let’s objectively analyze what’s actually happening in Syria, what risks it might pose to Ukraine, and whether this development is worth the buzz. And yes, I’d be thrilled if Syrian fighters or locals dealt with Russian forces there, rather than letting them leave without consequences.

Numbers: The Big Unknown

Let’s start with some simple math—or lack thereof. I don’t know the exact number of Russian soldiers leaving Syria. I also have no data on how much equipment they’ve managed to bring back or how much of it is actually operational. When it comes to weapons salvaged from Syria, it’s the same story: there’s no reliable information.

So, any predictions about 1,000, 5,000, or even 10,000 Russian soldiers supposedly leaving Syria and being ready to fight in Ukraine tomorrow are, at best, speculation and, at worst, manipulation. The only credible sources on this matter would be official statements from authorized representatives with legitimate insider knowledge. And no, these aren’t journalists, bloggers, or so-called eyewitnesses (good luck estimating the number of armed Russians fleeing Syria by sight alone). The only credible parties here are security officials from Ukraine, the EU, or the US, who would either directly share operational information or relay it through politicians.

That’s how the real world works. So, if a civilian claims their “sources” indicate 10,000 Russian troops are en route to Ukraine, they’re either deliberately misleading you or working for Russia. Random influencers with large followings but no ties to official institutions or intelligence agencies simply don’t have access to this kind of information. And neither do I, for that matter. Don’t fool yourselves, and don’t torture your already fragile nerves.

What Happens to Returning Russians?

Let’s assume Russian troops really are being recalled from Syria and brought back to Russia. What’s next?

The answer, according to anyone with military experience, is paperwork. Lots and lots of paperwork. Upon their return, these soldiers will face endless questioning from their superiors about what they lost in Syria, how much of it they lost, and why it happened. They’ll be writing detailed reports explaining every failure, down to the last detail.

This isn’t a one-day or two-day process. In the best-case scenario, it’ll take a month just to get their paperwork in order. The entire unit will be stuck waiting for their reports to be approved, because nobody will be allowed to go home until everything is accounted for. And if the losses are deemed unacceptable, the unit might even be forced to compensate for them somehow

In short, Russian troops returning from Syria are in for a bureaucratic nightmare, which will likely affect their morale and psychological state—a small bonus for Ukraine

Reality Check: The Myth of High Morale

Let’s be honest: it’s unrealistic to expect that Russian soldiers returning from Syria will be so demoralized by bureaucracy that they’ll outright refuse to fight. However, endless paperwork and dealing with Soviet-style management are unlikely to boost their motivation.
