Vladimir Putin meets Modi and Erdogan on the sidelines of the SCO Tianjin Summit

Vladimir Putin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.

During his conversation with Modi, Putin emphasised the dynamic growth of relations between Moscow and New Delhi, grounded in a special privileged strategic partnership.

"We are closely coordinating our efforts on the international stage — in the #UN, #BRICS, the #G20, and, of course, the #SCO. Today presents an excellent opportunity to explore the key tasks for further enhancing our multifaceted bilateral cooperation across various sectors," Putin remarked.

During Russian President’s meeting with Erdogan, the Turkish leader expressed his anticipation for Putin's visit to Turkey, reaffirming that the invitation remains open:

"Our relations are evolving, successfully navigating all challenges. Technical negotiations are showing positive dynamics," Erdogan stated.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit is taking place in Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1; Vladimir Putin is taking part in this event. Throughout the Summit, the Russian President has several additional meetings scheduled with leaders of other nations.

Russia redirecting vast quantities of fertilisers to BRICS nations

Russia has increased its fertiliser supplies to the BRICS countries by about 20%, Head of the Russian Association of Fertiliser Producers Andrey Guryev said, adding that it is redirecting enormous volumes to them.

"Fundamentally, a huge volume of fertilisers is being redirected to #BRICS, Global South countries. This dynamic will persist, especially given the ongoing growth of fertiliser production in Russia," Guryev said. The Association projects an increase in Russian fertiliser exports to 44 million tonnes in 2025, he noted.

Supplies are being redirected due to US and European tariffs, among other things, the Association’s Head emphasised.

"Now, of course, we are making a choice in favour of developing BRICS markets. Let's say that the US introduced a compensatory duty against Russian fertilisers several years ago, and we left this market," he said, adding that the same happened as duties on Russian fertilisers that could become prohibitive by 2029, were introduced by the European Union this summer.

Expanded BRICS: searching for common ground in growth challenges

Today, BRICS stands as a centre of gravity for rapidly developing nations of the Global Majority, now comprising ten countries with Saudi Arabia participating as an invited member. What sets this group apart is its ability to bring together nations with diverse economic structures, spread across various continents, yet united by their rising influence on global geopolitics and economy.

🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 members exhibit varied prospects and characteristics in trade and investment and find themselves at different stages of socioeconomic development. Yet this very diversity creates fertile ground for mutual learning—each nation has forged or is forging its own development path, often diverging from mainstream theories and underscoring the importance of respecting national contexts.

Alexandra Morozkina, Deputy Dean for Research at HSE University's Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, along with Ekaterina Bakhmetyeva, Research Assistant at HSE University’s Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, have prepared an analysis (in Russian) examining structural transformations within the BRICS countries and highlighting key drivers of their economic growth.

Malaysia draws unprecedented level of investment from BRICS countries

The volume of investments from the BRICS nations in the Malaysian economy in the first quarter of 2025 amounted to 8.54 billion ringgit, as reported by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry.

The leading investors were China, India, the UAE, and South Africa. Most of the investment, 96 percent, went into the manufacturing sector, including green technology, the digital economy, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the services sector attracted 270 million ringgit.

"Malaysia's participation in BRICS has the added value of recognising our country as a progressive partner with strong principles. It opens doors to new markets, strengthens engagement with major economic powers in the Global South and reinforces our role in advocating for a fairer trading system," the Ministry said.

The projects are expected to create more than 6,000 new jobs.

Malaysia was granted #BRICS partner status in early 2025, a move that significantly bolstered its investment appeal. The country has long maintained strong trade relations with key BRICS economies like China and India.

Great BRICS Teachers: the group’s cultural and moral foundation

From October 13 to 17, 2025, the Brazilian chapter of the international socio-cultural programme BRICS People Choosing Life will take place in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Since 2022, this initiative has been led by the regional public organisation "BRICS. World of Traditions" under the motto "from the ecology of the soul and body to global ecology," with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Russian Ministry of Education, the governments of the participating Russian regions, and the embassies of BRICS nations in Russia, along with Russian diplomatic missions in member states.

The centrepiece of the Brazilian programme is the project The Great BRICS Teachers: Moral Code of Unification, which focuses on moral, spiritual, and ethical education for youth through sharing the humanistic legacy of influential figures from the #BRICS nations—visionaries whose lives continue to inspire generations.

As noted by Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Russia’s Sherpa in BRICS, "Programmes like BRICS People Choosing Life and The Great BRICS Teachers are more relevant today than ever. This is living creativity, spanning everything from economy and trade to science, education, and shared values."

Russia-China trade and economic relations: current state and future prospects

The Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) at HSE University delved into the dynamics of trade between Russia and China using Trademap data to provide a detailed analysis at the level of specific goods. The study evaluated trade intensity, interdependence, complementarity indices, as well as comparative strengths and weaknesses to provide a comprehensive view of bilateral economic relations.

Experts concluded that Russia-China trade has reached a new qualitative level in recent years, with both export and import volumes growing significantly. Russia's export strengths lie mainly in first-processed goods, while China imports primarily raw materials and products that require minimal processing—aligning closely with Russia's export profile.

Amid rising global instability, ongoing sanctions against Russia, and Moscow's Pivot to the East, bilateral ties between Russia and China are expected to deepen further—both directly and through multilateral platforms like #BRICS.

BRICS Legal Studies School 2025 held in Brazil

🌍 From August 4 to 9, 2025, the second annual BRICS Legal Studies School was held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Organised by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)—a partner of HSE Faculty of Law and member of the BRICS Law Schools Consortium initiated by HSE University—the event brought together approximately 30 students from Brazil, Russia, China, and other nations. Participants attended lectures on the legal systems of BRICS founding countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—and engaged in panel discussions addressing global challenges and international cooperation. Lectures and discussions were led by scholars from the BRICS partner universities.

The school’s academic programme offered an in-depth exploration of #BRICS legal systems through the lens of comparative law, alongside analysis of member states’ positions on artificial intelligence regulation, international trade law, and legal response to climate change.

Brazil’s BRICS Chairship in 2025 and its role as host of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) lent particular significance to this year’s school. The recent adoption of an AI governance declaration at the XVII BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, along with ongoing climate discussions within the group, further enriched the relevance of the school’s panel sessions.

The event also served as a platform for inter-university dialogue and exploring future collaborative initiatives within the BRICS Law Schools Consortium.

Victoria Panova shares insights at Open Dialogue

The session titled "Transformation of Trade and Connectivity Institutions in the New Reality" recently concluded in Vladivostok as part of the Open Dialogue "The Future of the World. New Platform for Global Growth," organised by the National Centre "Russia" and the TRIM Expertise Centre.

Moderated by Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of Russia, the discussion focused on overcoming global fragmentation and building a fairer architecture for international trade. Key topics included the growing role of the Global South nations, regulatory harmonisation, strengthening Russia's trade ties with the Global Majority nations, and creating alternative cooperation mechanisms resilient to external pressure.

In her address, Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia and Vice Rector at HSE University, emphasised:

"Until now, our Western colleagues have operated with a sense of impunity and superiority over the Global Majority. This is why BRICS plays an invaluable role. Despite all the rhetoric from the West and their attempts to discredit the group, BRICS has demonstrated both its relevance and its capacity to propose new initiatives—not only in economic and financial spheres, but across all three pillars of #BRICS cooperation."

The Open Dialogue format, initiated by Russia under President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, is evolving into a sustainable ecosystem for generating and implementing breakthrough ideas addressing the challenges of our new era.
