China ready to enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation with Brazil

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday that China stands ready to enhance strategic mutual trust with Brazil, firmly support each other and deepen practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have forged solid mutual trust and friendship, and jointly provided important strategic guidance for the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future, Wang said.

At present, international trade is facing great uncertainties and multilateralism is encountering serious challenges, he said, noting that it is of great significance for BRICS countries to carry out close coordination.

"Wang said that Brazil has fully fulfilled its duties as the rotating chair of BRICS and made the Rio de Janeiro Summit a success, which promoted the solidarity and cooperation among the Global South countries. China highly appreciates Brazil's efforts," he added.

Noting that the current international situation is undergoing complex changes, Wang said that China is willing to strengthen coordination with Brazil, join hands with BRICS countries to resist unilateralism and bullying acts, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and promote the reform and improvement of the global governance system.

Collaboration is Currency: BRICS+ Fashion Elevates Emerging Designers

Beyond the United States, there is a world that not only embraces but also celebrates Black and Brown creatives, said Nichole M. Bess, CEO & Founder of Noir Fashion Week, on the sidelines of the BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow.

🧵🌟She explained that Noir Fashion Week was founded to support BIPOC designers who had often been excluded from major industry platforms and lacked the right business infrastructure. Now in its eighth season, Noir continues to advance their presence on the world stage.

🗣Speaking to Sputnik Africa, Bess noted she had never felt so “respected, loved, and seen” as she did at the summit, underscoring her belief that “collaboration is currency.” She praised the summit’s hospitality, organization, and commitment to creating opportunities for emerging designers.

🇷🇺 Her message to skeptics back home: don’t underestimate Moscow. The city, she said, is not only beautiful, but filled with warmth and people who make you feel truly welcome.

'Great Networking Event': CEO of Accra Fashion Week on BRICS+ Fashion Summit

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Nana Tamaklo, founder and CEO of Accra Fashion Week and FashionGhana.com, described the event as "amazing." Following last year's decision to create the BRICS International Fashion Federation, he's eager to see what happens next.

"It's a very impressive organization. They're doing very well, and I hope to be more part of the upcoming events and the activities," Tamaklo told Sputnik Africa.

⚫️Regarding the challenges facing new designers seeking to rival established global brands, Tamaklo observed that big brands are now adopting marketing strategies that were once unique to smaller, newer brands.

"So if you have a plan, you need to move on it very quickly" he warned.

He also added that the AI technology is going to give a platform to more and more people. He expressed hope that in the future, "it's going to boil down to who really has the good brand and who really has the good designs."

Experts from the BRICS Expert Council-Russia take part in International Winter School on Development Challenges in Brazil

On August 25–26, the first joint International Winter School on Development Challenges—hosted by the University of Campinas, HSE University, and Durban University of Technology—took place in Campinas, Brazil. The event served as a platform for doctoral students and young researchers from the BRICS nations to discuss strategies addressing the impacts of climate change.

The school’s programme emphasised practical solutions for sustainable development challenges within the BRICS nations and explored policies for financing green projects across the Global South.

Anastasia Podrugina, Associate Professor at the HSE School of World Economy, Head of the Section of Structural Global Economic Problems under the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, delivered a lecture on the history and economic foundations of the US dollar’s dominance in the global financial system. She examined trends in the dollar use for reserves and settlements, noting that while geopolitical aspects play a role, “economic factors—such as liquidity and transfer costs—remain the underlying drivers.”

Alexandra Morozkina
, Deputy Dean for Research at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, built on this theme with a focus on BRICS initiatives. She highlighted that while declarations have referenced settlements in national currencies since 2010, concrete progress began around 2017. Today, key elements of the #BRICS financial infrastructure aimed at enhancing the liquidity of national currencies are taking shape, including a BRICS exchange alliance, the BRICS Local Currency Bond Fund, the New Development Bank, and the Grain Exchange.

Igor Makarov
, Head of the School of World Economy at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, noted that the current Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030 are unlikely to be met. He emphasised that the global community will soon need to redefine the sustainable development agenda for the coming decades. The BRICS nations, he argued, could play a pivotal role in this dialogue, offering fresh perspectives on energy systems, digital infrastructure, social welfare, and consumption models.

Brazil to prepare extraordinary BRICS summit amid threats from the US

The Brazilian authorities are organising an extraordinary BRICS summit. The preparations for the meeting are being led by the president's chief adviser, Celso Amorim, according to Valor Econômico. Brazil holds the BRICS Chairship in 2025.

The country's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, plans to discuss and develop a joint response by the bloc's members to threats to cooperation from the US during the event.

The summit may be held in a video conference format, according to the statement. Amorim also plans to visit China next week to participate in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II. The adviser will hold several meetings with politicians from #BRICS countries who will also be visiting Beijing.

"Coexistence between countries cannot be achieved by force. When the US rejects multilateralism and tries to negotiate individually, it deprives the island of any chance of negotiation," Lula da Silva said.

Vladimir Putin meets Modi and Erdogan on the sidelines of the SCO Tianjin Summit

Vladimir Putin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.

Russia redirecting vast quantities of fertilisers to BRICS nations

Russia has increased its fertiliser supplies to the BRICS countries by about 20%, Head of the Russian Association of Fertiliser Producers Andrey Guryev said, adding that it is redirecting enormous volumes to them.

"Fundamentally, a huge volume of fertilisers is being redirected to #BRICS, Global South countries. This dynamic will persist, especially given the ongoing growth of fertiliser production in Russia," Guryev said. The Association projects an increase in Russian fertiliser exports to 44 million tonnes in 2025, he noted.

Supplies are being redirected due to US and European tariffs, among other things, the Association’s Head emphasised.

"Now, of course, we are making a choice in favour of developing BRICS markets. Let's say that the US introduced a compensatory duty against Russian fertilisers several years ago, and we left this market," he said, adding that the same happened as duties on Russian fertilisers that could become prohibitive by 2029, were introduced by the European Union this summer.

Expanded BRICS: searching for common ground in growth challenges

Today, BRICS stands as a centre of gravity for rapidly developing nations of the Global Majority, now comprising ten countries with Saudi Arabia participating as an invited member. What sets this group apart is its ability to bring together nations with diverse economic structures, spread across various continents, yet united by their rising influence on global geopolitics and economy.

🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 members exhibit varied prospects and characteristics in trade and investment and find themselves at different stages of socioeconomic development. Yet this very diversity creates fertile ground for mutual learning—each nation has forged or is forging its own development path, often diverging from mainstream theories and underscoring the importance of respecting national contexts.

Alexandra Morozkina, Deputy Dean for Research at HSE University's Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, along with Ekaterina Bakhmetyeva, Research Assistant at HSE University’s Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, have prepared an analysis (in Russian) examining structural transformations within the BRICS countries and highlighting key drivers of their economic growth.
