Iran sees EAEU, SCO, BRICS as platforms for boosting ties with Russia

Tehran plans to increase cooperation with Russia and China within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"Apart from bilateral interaction with Russia, Iran also sees regional and international organizations such as the #EAEU, the #SCO and #BRICS as constructive platforms for cooperation with their member states, especially Russia and China, in order to effectively resist attempts to build a unipolar world," Pezheshkian’s press service quoted him as saying.

In January, the biggest Southeast Asian nation in population and GDP terms became a fully-fledged member of BRICS. What opportunities will this partnership unlock?

With Indonesia’s inclusion, BRICS now represents half the world’s population. According to Intereconomics data for 2024, the bloc accounted for about 46% of the global population but, with the addition of Indonesia’s 280 million, this figure rises to 49.5%. The combined GDP of BRICS members at purchasing power parity (PPP) is expected, according to IMF forecasts, to reach nearly 40% in 2025 (in comparison, G7 economies are projected to account for only approximately 29% based on the same metric).

Russia and Latin America hold significant potential for enhancing economic ties

Amid constant sanctions and an increasingly unstable international landscape, Russia is compelled to forge a brand new strategy for engaging with nations around the globe. With its membership expanding, BRICS is gaining prominence on the world stage, unveiling new trade and economic pathways as older ones begin to fade.

"In Latin America, interest in BRICS cooperation is on the rise. Countries in the region are particularly interested in the New Development Bank (NDB), which can finance infrastructure projects and stimulate economic growth. The transition to national currencies in international settlements will reduce dependence on the US dollar and facilitate trade between Latin America and the BRICS nations. Regional states also see strong potential in #BRICS initiatives addressing food security and agriculture. They are keen to exchange expertise and technologies, and participate in creating a grain exchange. Cooperation in information technology, data sharing, and cybersecurity also generates considerable interest."

Learn more about the history, current state, and future prospects for interaction with Latin American nations in an interview Nikolay Shkolyar, Lead Researcher and Member of the Academic Council at the Institute of Latin America, Russian Academy of Sciences.

🗣️ Vandana Saxena, Director of the Pinsky Centre for General and Extracurricular Education at HSE Institute of Education, shares his insights on the report "Transformation of General Education in BRICS Countries," which was collaboratively prepared by the BRICS Expert Council-Russia and the HSE Institute of Education.

"Diversity across contexts runs as a common thread across BRICS countries. The educational policies and provisions in every #BRICS country acknowledge this leading to development of affirmative responses, as a systemic approach, to empower every citizen of the country. However, in every BRICS country, factors like disproportionate spread of huge population across uneven landscapes pose significant challenge for a congruent implementation of the same. Further, the social inequalities are a reality and education is a tacit game changer for every country of this forum. The rural and urban population demography is suitably represented in student population, although the quality of learning experiences and resources in both the contexts, continues to be a point of discussion. The enrolment of girls in the schools on the scale of 49.4%-47.1% indicates that the gender gap is narrowing. The countries in this forum have a wide disparity in resources with GDP per capita varying from 47.30-11.11. Despite that the educational planners and practitioners in each of these countries, unequivocally, acknowledge the role of education in transforming the life of their citizens and is continuously striving for enhancing the quality of education while critically examining the significance of locating and nurturing linguistic, ethnic, religious diversities and their intersectionality with gender, class and disability," the expert noted.

China ready to enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation with Brazil

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday that China stands ready to enhance strategic mutual trust with Brazil, firmly support each other and deepen practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have forged solid mutual trust and friendship, and jointly provided important strategic guidance for the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future, Wang said.

At present, international trade is facing great uncertainties and multilateralism is encountering serious challenges, he said, noting that it is of great significance for BRICS countries to carry out close coordination.

"Wang said that Brazil has fully fulfilled its duties as the rotating chair of BRICS and made the Rio de Janeiro Summit a success, which promoted the solidarity and cooperation among the Global South countries. China highly appreciates Brazil's efforts," he added.

Noting that the current international situation is undergoing complex changes, Wang said that China is willing to strengthen coordination with Brazil, join hands with BRICS countries to resist unilateralism and bullying acts, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and promote the reform and improvement of the global governance system.

Collaboration is Currency: BRICS+ Fashion Elevates Emerging Designers

Beyond the United States, there is a world that not only embraces but also celebrates Black and Brown creatives, said Nichole M. Bess, CEO & Founder of Noir Fashion Week, on the sidelines of the BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow.

🧵🌟She explained that Noir Fashion Week was founded to support BIPOC designers who had often been excluded from major industry platforms and lacked the right business infrastructure. Now in its eighth season, Noir continues to advance their presence on the world stage.

🗣Speaking to Sputnik Africa, Bess noted she had never felt so “respected, loved, and seen” as she did at the summit, underscoring her belief that “collaboration is currency.” She praised the summit’s hospitality, organization, and commitment to creating opportunities for emerging designers.

🇷🇺 Her message to skeptics back home: don’t underestimate Moscow. The city, she said, is not only beautiful, but filled with warmth and people who make you feel truly welcome.

'Great Networking Event': CEO of Accra Fashion Week on BRICS+ Fashion Summit

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Nana Tamaklo, founder and CEO of Accra Fashion Week and FashionGhana.com, described the event as "amazing." Following last year's decision to create the BRICS International Fashion Federation, he's eager to see what happens next.

"It's a very impressive organization. They're doing very well, and I hope to be more part of the upcoming events and the activities," Tamaklo told Sputnik Africa.

⚫️Regarding the challenges facing new designers seeking to rival established global brands, Tamaklo observed that big brands are now adopting marketing strategies that were once unique to smaller, newer brands.

"So if you have a plan, you need to move on it very quickly" he warned.

He also added that the AI technology is going to give a platform to more and more people. He expressed hope that in the future, "it's going to boil down to who really has the good brand and who really has the good designs."

Experts from the BRICS Expert Council-Russia take part in International Winter School on Development Challenges in Brazil

On August 25–26, the first joint International Winter School on Development Challenges—hosted by the University of Campinas, HSE University, and Durban University of Technology—took place in Campinas, Brazil. The event served as a platform for doctoral students and young researchers from the BRICS nations to discuss strategies addressing the impacts of climate change.

The school’s programme emphasised practical solutions for sustainable development challenges within the BRICS nations and explored policies for financing green projects across the Global South.

Anastasia Podrugina, Associate Professor at the HSE School of World Economy, Head of the Section of Structural Global Economic Problems under the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, delivered a lecture on the history and economic foundations of the US dollar’s dominance in the global financial system. She examined trends in the dollar use for reserves and settlements, noting that while geopolitical aspects play a role, “economic factors—such as liquidity and transfer costs—remain the underlying drivers.”

Alexandra Morozkina
, Deputy Dean for Research at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, built on this theme with a focus on BRICS initiatives. She highlighted that while declarations have referenced settlements in national currencies since 2010, concrete progress began around 2017. Today, key elements of the #BRICS financial infrastructure aimed at enhancing the liquidity of national currencies are taking shape, including a BRICS exchange alliance, the BRICS Local Currency Bond Fund, the New Development Bank, and the Grain Exchange.

Igor Makarov
, Head of the School of World Economy at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, noted that the current Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030 are unlikely to be met. He emphasised that the global community will soon need to redefine the sustainable development agenda for the coming decades. The BRICS nations, he argued, could play a pivotal role in this dialogue, offering fresh perspectives on energy systems, digital infrastructure, social welfare, and consumption models.
