BRICS educational landscape
BRICS education systems collectively account for roughly one-third of the global educational landscape. The accompanying infographic presents the scale and structure of school education in BRICS countries.
The visual material is descriptive rather than comparative, focusing on two key dimensions:
🕊 The socio-economic and demographic context of each country
🕊 The structure of their national education systems
The presented data highlights both the diversity within the BRICS education systems and the common foundations that allow for experience sharing and idea exchange. This, in turn, helps address the mutual challenges these countries face in reforming school education.

🎙 Remarks by Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Birichevskiy at the 3rd Russia-Africa conference of the Valdai Club and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Session 1: G20 and BRICS: Assessing Strategic Roles in an Evolving Global Order (28 July 2025)
💬 Dmitry Birichevskiy: South Africa’s Presidency in the G20 is of great importance for quite a number of reasons. It is the first time that an African country has assumed leadership of this key international economic forum. And this is exactly one of the manifestations of the emergence of a new world order. <...>
South Africa is steadily setting the tone for G20 endeavors with a focus on urgent issues of economic growth, food security, artificial intelligence, debt burden, and critical minerals. We support Pretoria’s priorities and strive to contribute to tangible practical results. <...>
Against the backdrop of rising geo-economic fragmentation, G20’s activities attract increasing attention. The Forum adopted its present form in 2008 — at a challenging time for the world economy – and since then proved itself an effective “crisis manager” on numerous occasions. G20 has remained resilient and efficient even at the peak of Western anti-Russian hysteria in 2022-2023. Today it continues to develop very much-needed consensus solutions on pressing economic and global issues.
🤝 The successive chairmanships of #BRICS countries in 2022-2025 made a significant input to the productive work of the G20.
The cycle of the BRICS leaderships in the G20 coincided with the steady strengthening of its positions in economic affairs. Today, BRICS and G7’ shares in the global GDP are measured as 40 and 29 percent respectively. <...>
South African Presidency has predictably placed G20 emphasis on the African agenda — a step that we fully support. Amidst the alarming developments in the global economy, situation in African countries looks particularly precarious. They routinely have to deal with the aftermaths of colonialism, thriving neocolonial practices, and inequitable division of labor. <...>
Africa will only benefit from boosting cooperation with BRICS as a conduit for the priorities of the Global South, including at major multilateral fora such as G20. BRICS membership now comprises South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia, who seek to promote both national objectives and pan-African agenda. Since 2025, Nigeria and Uganda have joined in as partner states. In addition, further enlargement of the New Development Bank through African shareholders seems rather promising.
🌐 Russia is a responsible contributor to the development agenda, both bilaterally and at international venues. Our focus is on maximizing the potential of Russian-African partnership.
We look forward to further fruitful cooperation and offer our African friends effective tools to enhance their economic sovereignty.
☝️ In current difficult geopolitical situation sovereignty is the key to the true economic and political independence.

Alexandra Morozkina, Deputy Dean for Research of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University, and Expert at the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, shares her insights on the BRICS Rio de Janeiro Declaration 2025:
The expert also noted the work on establishment of a system for cross-border payments and BRICS Multilateral Guarantee mechanism.
#EXPERT #OPINION #NDB #summit
🕊 🕊 🕊
"The economic section of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration underscores the continuity and consistency of the BRICS summits. This year, a pivotal focus remains on promoting transactions in national currencies, continuing the priorities set forth during the Russian Chairship. Paragraph 45 highlights the significant role of the New Development Bank (NDB) in this endeavour. Notably, from early 2024 to June 2025, the proportion of NDB loans issued in the member countries' national currencies rose from 20.3% to 24.2%. The bank has set a target to elevate this share to 30% by the close of 2026."
The expert also noted the work on establishment of a system for cross-border payments and BRICS Multilateral Guarantee mechanism.
"Paragraph 50 outlines the advancements made in establishing a system for cross-border payments. Building on last year's report "Improvement of the International Monetary and Financial System," the group has explored various aspects presented within it. Specifically, preferences regarding cross-border payments were gathered through consultations with Central Bank Governors and subsequently detailed in the Technical Report: BRICS Cross-Border Payments System, which is reflected in the final document.
Paragraph 47 highlights the 2024 Russian initiative aimed at creating a BRICS investment platform. The potential framework for this platform could also encompass the initiative for establishing BRICS Multilateral Guarantee mechanism (p. 48) as these guarantees are designed to attract private investment by mitigating project risks for private investors. National and Multilateral Development Banks frequently employ this strategy. For instance, as of the end of 2024, Russia's development bank, Vnesheconombank, had issued guarantees and sureties exceeding 1.6 trillion roubles. While the multilateral BRICS New Development Bank is positioned to formally offer guarantees for member countries' projects, this mechanism has yet to be utilised."

"The battle against climate change has emerged as a top priority for cooperation within BRICS in 2023–2024. With Brazil as the chair country, the focus intensifies as we approach the UN Climate Change Conference, set to take place in Belém, Brazil, this November. Therefore, it is no surprise that climate issues have taken centre stage at this year’s BRICS Summit. Attention has been concentrated on three pivotal areas:
The first area is climate finance, directly linked to the Belém agenda. This will serve as a cornerstone for developing the Baku to Belém Roadmap to 1.3T, aimed at mobilising $1.3 trillion in climate finance annually by 2035. The recent BRICS Summit in Rio culminated in the signing of the Leaders' Framework Declaration on Climate Finance, the first document that captures the collective stance of countries representing the Global Majority on this crucial issue. This position emphasises not only the urgent need to boost climate financing but also its vital connection to reforming multilateral financial institutions and the international monetary system at large. Additionally, it calls for expanding tools to mobilise private capital and diversifying financing avenues, including the transition finance concept proposed by Russia at last year’s BRICS Business Council," the expert noted.

"The second area lies at the intersection of climate and biodiversity. The Brazilian delegation is actively championing this connection by promoting the bioeconomy concept. While this term did not make it into the final document, several of its key tenets—such as the essential role of forests in tackling a wide array of environmental challenges—are reflected within it. Furthermore, confirming its commitment to preserving vital ecosystems, Brazil announced the establishment of a Tropical Forest Forever Facility in Belém," the expert noted.
Igor Makarov also emphasised the importance of bloc's institutionalising in his comments.
Lastly, the third area focuses on institutionalising cooperation within BRICS on climate issues. Notably, regulations for the BRICS Climate Research Platform were approved during Russia's Chairship in 2024. The newly established BRICS Laboratory for Trade, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development aims to foster the development of coordinated approaches to trade and environmental policy. Additionally, the adoption of the BRICS Principles for Fair, Inclusive, and Transparent Carbon Accounting in Product and Facility Footprints sets the stage for developing universally recognised methodologies and standards for assessing greenhouse gas emissions across various industries.
It is noteworthy that these climate-related documents are unified under the overarching title "BRICS Climate Leadership Roadmap." At the same time, the leaders' declaration underscores the group's recognition of its unique responsibility in driving the green transformation of the global economy. These important signals illustrate that BRICS is ready to take its collaborative efforts in this area to a new level and assume a more significant role in global climate change regulation," he finalised.

"On the one hand, the BRICS countries are the largest emitters, on the other —the largest producers of low-carbon technologies. And due to this, the balance of the carbon market can be maintained, among other things. And to solve this problem, to discuss the further modality of functioning of carbon markets in 2024, we launched a partnership on carbon markets within the framework of the Russian presidency of #BRICS. And this year it is already starting its full-fledged work," Kondratiev said.
