Russia, other BRICS members to defend their interests

BRICS countries are looking for alternatives to the dollar in order to insure themselves against abuses from the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in remarks about the potential of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in standing up to financial threats emanating from Washington.

"Because there have been specific threats from Washington against BRICS, that BRICS should be fought, that BRICS undermines the interests of the United States, I will say in fairness that President Trump previously had laid out a somewhat different point of view," he said at a news conference following the SCO Foreign Ministers' Council meeting in Tianjin.

Lavrov said a gradual pivot away from the dollar is now unstoppable, with statistics confirming the trend by showing how the dollar's share in world trade has changed.

"We have, I want to stress this again, every reason to believe that #BRICS member countries are also sovereign and value this status in the global system," the minister said.

Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation

The Russian-Chinese Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin on 16 July 2001 was an important milestone in the development of relations between Russia and China. This document laid the foundation for a strong partnership between the two countries based on mutual respect, trust and interests.

For Russia, this treaty has become a strategic tool in a changing international order. Cooperation with China helps Russia diversify its foreign economic ties and strengthen its position in the international arena. In the context of Western sanctions, Russia is actively developing economic and political ties with China, which contributes to the creation of a new multipolar world.

China, in turn, views Russia as a key partner in its "Belt and Road initiative". Cooperation with Russia opens up new trade routes and opportunities to increase China's influence in Asia and beyond.

For #BRICS, this partnership allows them to advance their economic interests and also strengthens the group's global position as opposed to traditional Western centres of power.

Cooperation based on this treaty continues to grow to this day, opening up new horizons for trade, economics and political interaction.

Sectoral systems of innovation in two BRICS countries: A case of the clothing, textile, leather, and footwear sector of South Africa and Brazil
Sipho Mbatha

Clothing, textiles, leather, and footwear (CTLF) sector of South Africa has been a priority sector for the government for almost two decades. However, the CTLF sector has not been able to achieve the reindustrialisation levels envisaged by the government and other stakeholders. It is therefore necessary to explore the possibilities of gaining competitive advantage and also understand the challenges facing the sectoral systems of innovation that impede the development of the CTLF sector in South Africa. Through the triple helix theory of innovation and Porter’s diamond model of competitive advantage, this review paper looks at the CTLF sectors of two BRICS nations, Brazil and South Africa, in an attempt to determine the factors that could jump-start the competitive development of the South African CTLF sector. This paper outlines proposals for improving the sectoral systems of innovation in South Africa’s CTLF industry, which should help it gain competitive advantage. It also makes a scholarly contribution to designing strategies that could be used to enhance collaboration among the BRICS nations.

Ethiopian Official Ties BRICS Membership to Historic Role in Pan-African Advocacy

🌎Ethiopia’s membership in BRICS goes beyond national interest — it’s about amplifying Africa’s voice on global platforms, Melaku Mulualem, Director General at the Institute of Foreign Affairs, told Sputnik Africa.

🤝He noted that South-South cooperation allows member nations to collectively address shared challenges — distinct from those of the Global North — while highlighting Ethiopia’s historic and ongoing role in Pan-African advocacy and mutual support.

Political analyst Unnikrishnan: Trump's statement on duties on BRICS products is absurd

The statement of US President Donald Trump on the introduction of duties on products of BRICS member countries can be considered strange and contradictory, expressed the opinion of Indian political scientist, Honorary Research Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation expert centre Nandan Unnikrishnan.

Earlier, Trump wrote in his Truth Social , that any state that supports the "anti-American" #BRICS policy will be subject to an additional duty of 10 per cent. According to him, there will be no exceptions.

"You see, it's kind of a contradictory statement because India and the US at the moment, literally this minute, are talking about a bilateral trade agreement. And those talks are going on in Washington at the moment. Well, naturally, if there is any bilateral agreement, it will be difficult for the US after that to impose any additional duties, say 10 per cent, against India, at least, and if such duties are imposed against BRICS, it cannot make an exception for India, so I think it is a strange statement," the political analyst said.

The popularity of vocational education in the BRICS countries is growing

The number of students choosing vocational and technical education in the BRICS countries has grown by 20% over the past four years, according to the results of a study presented on Friday at the press center of the Rossiya Segodnya media group.

"The key trend of the #BRICS countries' vocational education systems is orientation to the needs of the labor market and guaranteed employment of graduates. In Russia, this task is successfully addressed through the tools of the federal project "Professionalitet", which is aimed at training qualified specialists within priority sectors, including industry, transportation, energy, agriculture and services," said Viktor Neumyvakin, Director of the Department of State Policy in the Field of Secondary Vocational Education and Vocational Training of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

The main topic of the study is the impact of the vocational education system on the development of the BRICS countries' potential. It was initiated by Russia and conducted by the Institute for the Development of Vocational Education together with scientists, researchers and practitioners from the BRICS countries.

How BRICS is creating a new economic reality

The BRICS economies now resemble a well-oiled industrial conveyor belt. Trade within the BRICS countries is growing three times faster than the global average, and their combined GDP has reached $31 trillion by 2024—almost a third (28%) of the global economy. According to purchasing power parity, the share of the BRICS countries in global GDP is 39 per cent. Trade turnover between the countries exceeds $10 trillion—a huge cargo flow along international logistics routes, where each country plays an important role.

For Russia, the BRICS partnership is a strategic hub, with half of the country's foreign trade passing through it. At the same time, Russia's settlements with the #BRICS countries in national currencies reach 90 per cent, which reduces dependence on traditional currency systems and strengthens economic security.

What important steps have already been taken by Russia and its BRICS partners? Answers to these and other questions in the article by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development.

BRICS in Brazil and the voice of the Global South

The XVII BRICS Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro. Its slogan was "Strengthening the Global South's cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance" and was attended by the leaders of Brazil, India, South Africa, Indonesia and Ethiopia.

Was the Brazilian BRICS summit a breakthrough? Russian experts note that the meeting was fruitful, but not as bright as the Kazan summit last year. Western observers, having analysed the results of the summit, suggest that the importance of BRICS and multilateral meetings in this format is declining—due to the risks associated with harsh US criticism and threats, the absence of key figures Vladimir Putin (who joined the summit via videoconference, Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov) and Xi Jinping (who skipped the event for the first time) and the general impression that the summit was more of a "dress rehearsal" for the COP30 climate conference to be held in Belene in November. Commentators debate the reasons for the absence of the leaders of the two key powers, but suggest that it provided Brazil with a chance to play a major role in promoting the BRICS agenda as the "main voice of the Global South".

Speak Truth, Face Sanctions? The West’s War on BRICS Journalism

The EU’s July 15 sanctions are a direct assault on media freedom and South-South collaboration, Dr. Nonkululeko Mantula, Co-Chairperson of the BRICS Journalists Association, wrote in her "Don’t Sensor Our Voices, Don’t Restrain Our Freedom!" article.

The sanctions—targeting nine individuals and six entities allegedly involved in “Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference”—are seen by Mantula as a veiled attempt to suppress rising Global South narratives that challenge Western dominance.

“This is evident that there is a sheer pursuit for dominance and perpetual oppression by the West,” she warned.

Mantula emphasized that the BRICS Journalists Association operates independently of state policy, focused on truthful reporting and journalist protection.

🇺🇳 She highlighted violations of international law and press freedom, stating the sanctions contradict the UN’s Action Plan on journalist safety.

“The recent sanctions … is a knock below the belt for the journalism fraternity and the freedom of speech.”

Her call—“Don’t sensor our voices, don’t restrain our freedom!”—is a plea for global institutions to stand against what she frames as a dangerous precedent in censoring critical and diverse media perspectives.

Ryabkov: None of BRICS members seeks to replace dollar

BRICS is pivoting toward payments in national currencies, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview.

"No one in the #BRICS community is raising the issue of replacing the dollar. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that over the past few years we have wound up in a situation where the Russian Federation has been deprived of the opportunity to use the dollar, by and large, for very many payments due to sanctions that block that," he said.

"The necessary option for us is to look for alternatives in the form of mechanisms of mutual settlements that would be fairly resistant to external negative impact, be immune to this kind of measures from outside," the diplomat went on to say. "The alternative is to switch to settlements in national currencies. That’s the path we are taking within BRICS."

According to Ryabkov, Russia already makes more than 90% of all payments with its BRICS partners in national currencies.
