๐ BRICS gives hope that Global South countries develop "the right way," an economist says
Today, BRICS is an organization that can promote trade and economic development in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and even Europe, Dr. Hod Anyigba, Chief Economist at ITUC-Africa and the Executive Director of its Africa Labour Research and Education Institute (ALREI), told Sputnik Africa.
The IMF, the World Bank, and the developed countries "have taken on the responsibility of developing the entire world," but BRICS represents an alternative to this status quo, the expert said on the sidelines of the 57th session of the ECA Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Along with the development of trade, this concerns the question of investment and financing, "so that we don't take some loans that we'll have to pay for a hundred years," he said.
๐ฃ "This will be the way to develop as we should, because Africa, Asia, all of us, we must develop the right way, as it should be, not as developed countries, for example, want," he stressed.

Brazil proposes BRICS to use blockchain to enhance co-operation
Brazil has launched an initiative to propose that BRICS countries use blockchain technology to facilitate trade and financial transactions.
Brazil's Central Bank and Ministry of Finance are developing the initiative, which is expected to be presented in July 2025 at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro. It is expected that the use of blockchain will help reduce dependence on the dollar and strengthen economic cooperation within BRICS.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has previously emphasised the need to create alternative financial settlement mechanisms for #BRICS. He explained that "this is not about replacing national currencies", but about integrating the idea of building a multipolar world into the international financial system.

๐ฎ๐ท๐บ๐ธ Iran-US nuclear talks: Washington "would have to respect Iran's sovereignty and interests rather than trying to bully it," says an expert
๐ฃ โIran's willingness to negotiate on the nuclear issue may be a starting point for dialogue, what I may refer to as testing the waters,โ Dr. Darlington Ngoni Mahuku, a lecturer in the Department of Peace and Governance at Bindura University of Science Education, Zimbabwe, told Sputnik Africa, noting that significant challenges remain.
Dr. Mahuku argued that โany potential bargaining will still be embedded in the historical power dynamics between the two states [...] Iran is accepting dialogue and participating in the negotiations with wide-open eyes, especially given that they may interpret this as some kind of geopolitical maneuvering,โ he explained.
The expert also highlighted the role of BRICS nations in counterbalancing Western military alliances and promoting alternative security frameworks. โThese countries are gradually asserting their independence and sovereignty, seeking to provide a multipolar world order,โ he said.
๐ฃ โThey have become key players in shaping alternative security architectures by fostering closer economic, political, and security partnerships or alliances. BRICS nations can effectively counterbalance Western influence and promote a more inclusive and representative global governance architecture,โ Dr. Mahuku added.
He further emphasized the potential impact of BRICS expansion on the Global South. โAn expanded BRICS grouping could provide a more robust political and economic platform for promoting South-South cooperation, as espoused by dependency scholars or dependency theorists,โ he said. โThis will challenge the global North's dominance, fostering a more equitable world order.โ

The notion of "Global majority countries" is actively gaining ground in the political and diplomatic discourse. This term, although appearing to be a relatively new term, has in fact come into use thanks to the global political realities of the 21st century. It reflects tectonic shifts in the balance of power in the world system.
The Global majority countries are a collective term for the states of the Global South that constitute the majority of the world's population and economies. These countries are contrasted with the "old centres of power" โ the traditional countries, which are usually Western countries such as the United States, Canada, the European Union, as well as Australia, Japan and some others. But it is the developing and newly industrialised states that represent the majority of the world's population, cultural diversity and growth prospects.
The term "Global majority" has become more frequently used in recent years, particularly against the backdrop of debates about the redistribution of influence and resources in the global agenda. Although the term itself cannot be formally tied to a specific event or date, the key idea has emerged as an alternative to the concept of the "Global South" or "developing countries".
The composition of the World majority is very diverse. It includes countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa and parts of Eastern Europe. What is common to the Global majority countries is that they often feel excluded from key global decisions that they feel are shaped by Western dictation. Many of these countries aspire to build a multipolar world where their voices are equally heard.
The concept of "Global majority" is particularly closely associated with BRICS. #BRICS is one of the main symbols of the Global South's attempts to achieve greater autonomy and reshape the existing system of global governance. Within the bloc, countries are actively discussing reform of institutions such as the United Nations (#UN), the International Monetary Fund (#IMF) and the World Bank to better accommodate the interests of developing countries.

BRICS expansion in Asia: building resilience and global influence
Despite US tariff threats, BRICS's enlargement in Asia shows its resilience and the desire for collaboration.
In recent years, BRICS has become a key player globally. The blocs's influence is growing. In 2025, Indonesia became the first Southeast Asian nation to join BRICS. #Malaysia, #Thailand and #Vietnam joined as partner countries, boosting #ASEAN's connection.

Trade routes and partnerships show fundamental changes in Russia
Against the backdrop of the structural transformation of the Russian economy, major shifts in trade routes have influenced at least 40% of the country's exports and imports since 2022. During this period, BRICS countries supplanted Western nations to become Russia's primary trade partners, as highlighted in a study by the Analytical Credit Rating Agency (ACRA).
The report states that these fundamental changes took place predominantly in 2022 and 2023. Over these eighteen months, BRICS countries took over the position previously held by Western countries in Russiaโs trading ecosystem.
According to ACRA, the share of #BRICS countries in Russia's foreign trade turnover surged from 20-25% in 2022 to 45-55% by 2024. The importance of Russia's Central Asian neighbours has also grown, along with that of Belarus, albeit to a lesser degree.
Moreover, the reorientation of trade routes has coincided with alterations in the currency structure for trade payments, the types of transportations utilised, and several other facets of Russia's trade operations.
