it's that time of the week when i get into a non tech rabbit hole for no fucking reason and i bring you all along with me
a few days ago i was bored and browsing wikipedia late at night and I was curious to find out why Thailand was named like that since i recalled that historically it was called the Kingdom of Siam (i don't know too much about SEA but i remembered this small thing from a joke in an old Simpsons episode lol)
turns out it got renamed in 1939 by a military dictator who took power in a coup and that the guy was straight up a Mussolini larper down to copying both his aesthetic and even the fucking fascist salute lol
he also ended up allying with Japan/the axis but ironically just like italy they switched sides at the last second and ended up with the allies
unfortunately all of this also meant he did stuff like banning traditional clothes (some of them exposed women's breasts and he wanted to stop that in order to be taken more "seriously" by western nations), pushing ethno-nationalism and in general trying to unify the nation under a singular “Thai” identity
when eventually he was ousted from power the King regained power but a lot of the changes he made to the country ended up staying in place (including the new name of the country)

finding out just now that a lot of youtube channels around me have been literally bought by private equity (including some i follow since forever and like a lot)
so i am making this post as a digital equivalent of shooting at the sky to keep the rent in your neighbourhood low to confirm that i am independent/this is not the case for me/i would not really tolerate compromising my freedom in what i can do creatively even if it meant making bank

also to clarify: i won't judge who does this and i am not saying that this is bad/they will inevitably make bad videos
i just do not personally trust private equity enough to have any say on what i would make since they are by definition only focused on making money
doing youtube as a job is hard, extremely risky and dependent on a lot of stuff that you quite literally can't control since the platform is a black box, so i don't judge them for wanting to play it safe
it's not just for me personally, while i am totally ok with taking sponsors (and even there i don't let them control what i say) or working with/for companies i want and need a space for my own creative projects to be free from these kinds of constraints or pushes toward potential enshittification
