There is an interesting story about a meeting between Democritus and Hippocrates. The citizens of Abdera summoned the legendary physician Hippocrates to cure their neighbor the philosopher Democritus, who they believed was a lunatic. Instead, this epistolary novel reveals a subversion of the clinical gaze: the doctor arrives to find the “madman” dissecting animals to locate the physiological seat of melancholy. In a garden that served as a sanctuary of reason, the dynamic shifts from a medical consultation to a philosophical initiation. Democritus’s “madness” is revealed as the only sane response to a world addicted to vanity, a Cynic to the core. Known as the laughing philosopher, he was not actually insane, no ritual was being preformed, he was doing what universities do an autopsy of sorts to understand the nature of life.

Ultimately, the diagnostic power is reversed. Hippocrates, the man tasked with restoring Democritus to society, concludes that it is society that is pathologically ill. He abandons his clinical detachment in that moment to become a herald for Democritus, realizing that the “Great Physician” is actually the student of the philosopher, and the true cure for the human condition is not only medicine, but the laughter of the philosopher who has seen through the illusions of the world. He earned nickname the “Laughing Philosopher” because he emphasized euthymia (cheerfulness or tranquility) as the goal of life & frequently laughed at the folly, vanities, and irrationality of human nature. Unlike other contemporary philosophers who viewed human behavior with solemnity, Democritus found amusement in the absurdity of people’s anxieties and greed.
