Imagine yourself living right now in a tattered tent, its bedding soaked by rainwater, its walls torn apart by a biting wind.  Your children huddle around you in the darkness, unable to sleep, shivering from the cold and hunger, and you are helpless, unable to protect them from this suffering!

How would you feel, so powerless and helpless before them?  Wouldn't you wish the earth would open up and swallow you whole?!
