Everything and everyone you hold dear will inevitably be separated from you — this is the inescapable mark of impermanence. Yet the certainty of separation does not imply that engagement with the world is misguided or meaningless from a higher perspective. It becomes so only when one clings to external achievements as ends in themselves, mistaking what is conditioned and transient for something capable of providing lasting fulfillment. Such engagement, rooted in attachment, is indeed no different from futility.

When approached without clinging, however, action in the world takes on a different meaning. External achievements are not sought as sources of final value, but function as reflections of one’s inner cultivation. They reveal the degree to which the mind remains composed, lucid, and free while operating within conditions that are inherently unstable. What is cultivated is not permanence in outcomes, but fundamental orientations of your mind determining times to come.

From this standpoint, engagement with the world accords with the Dharma. Action becomes an expression of right intention and right effort, grounded in wisdom rather than craving. The world continues to change, decay, and dissolve, yet the practitioner’s conduct remains aligned with insight into emptiness. What matters is not what is produced or preserved externally, but the liberation of the mind that is realized through acting without grasping.
