Extensive preparations are underway across Iraq, with mawakib, mourning tents, and logistical arrangements established in the holy cities. Around 30,000 Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al Shaabi) personnel have been deployed to provide security and manage the funeral ceremonies. The Iraqi government has declared Wednesday a public holiday, with most provinces doing the same to facilitate participation.
Thousands of buses and organized convoys are arriving from across Iraq, and attendance is estimated at 14 to 15 million people. Hundreds of mawakib are providing food, water, accommodation, medical aid, and transportation for mourners.
The funeral is expected to be one of the largest public gatherings in Iraq’s modern history. It is being presented as a powerful demonstration of support for Wilayat al Faqih and as a reaffirmation of the religious and spiritual bond between Iraq and Iran, emphasizing unity around the Ahlul Bayt (A), the Marja’iyyah, and the Resistance.

During the past twelve hours, two major security incidents have occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, further increasing tensions across West Asia. An oil tanker reported a fire on its port side after being struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing approximately eight nautical miles east of Lima, Oman. Shortly afterward, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported another incident involving an oil tanker that sustained minor structural damage after being struck by a UAV while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Initial assessments circulating among security observers suggest the drone may have originated from Iran because the vessel was reportedly using the Omani route opposed by Tehran. However, no official confirmation has yet been provided regarding responsibility.
These developments come at a time when regional military tensions continue to rise. Among the scenarios is the possibility of American strikes against strategic Iranian infrastructure, including port facilities (Sirik and Bandar Abbas), under the justification of responding to attacks on international navigation in the coming hours.
The timing is particularly significant because these developments coincide with the funeral ceremonies of Imam Sayyid Ali Husayni Khamenei. Many observers believe that once the funeral ceremonies conclude, Tehran will possess greater political and military flexibility regarding its regional posture. Regional attention is therefore focused not only on Iran but also on Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf.
Meanwhile, another important development concerns occupied Syria. Following diplomatic meetings involving the leadership of the occupied Syrian administration and French President Emmanuel Macron, reports indicate that Paris has offered significant political and economic incentives in exchange for cooperation with broader American objectives. At the same time, regional observers expect President Donald Trump to continue discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding Julani and the future political and military direction of Syria against Lebanon. These discussions may also influence future developments inside Lebanon.
Yemen has simultaneously emerged as another major front. While Sana’a prepares to receive another civilian flight belonging to Iran’s Mahan Air, reports from Al-Akhbar state that Ansar Allah is considering using the Bab al-Mandab Strait as strategic leverage against Saudi Arabia. According to these reports, the movement may issue a deadline demanding the removal of restrictions imposed on Yemeni ports. Should these restrictions remain in place, reciprocal restrictions on Saudi maritime navigation through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab could be introduced. Such a move would significantly affect one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
Lebanon is likewise entering what many analysts describe as a decisive period. Following Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, negotiations regarding Lebanon may become considerably more complicated. Netanyahu continues to face domestic political pressures while simultaneously attempting to balance relations with America. Several important questions now emerge. Will Tehran adopt a firmer position regarding ceasefire negotiations following the funeral? Will Netanyahu use Congress to limit Trump’s negotiating space? Will Hezbollah maintain its current restrained military posture, or will future Israeli actions force a broader regional response extending beyond Lebanese territory?
Taken together, these developments suggest that multiple theatres of war are becoming increasingly interconnected. The coming days, particularly after the conclusion of the funeral ceremonies and the Washington meetings, may determine whether the region moves toward de-escalation or enters another phase of wider war.
