The grave of Ismail ibn Jafar (A), the eldest son of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (A), was originally in Jannat al-Baqi, Medina. For centuries, it had a shrine and dome, serving as a pilgrimage site.
Historical accounts suggest that this shrine was built on land that was previously the house of Imam Sajjad (A). In its courtyard, there was a well from which people drank for the healing of the sick.
Some reports indicate that Ismail’s body was later moved within Baqi—either near Umm al-Banin’s grave, the Martyrs of Harra, or 10 meters away from Halima al-Sa’diyya’s grave.
This shrine was destroyed in 1925 when the Wahhabis took control of Mecca and Medina. A simple wall was built around it until it was later completely demolished during the construction of a road near Baqi.
During different historical periods, the grave had a dome. Some sources suggest it was built during the Fatimid rule in Egypt (302–564 AH). By the 8th century AH, the shrine had a large white dome, west of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib’s (r) dome.
The shrine was located next to the wall of Medina. Reports also confirm that an abandoned mosque and a well existed beside it, reinforcing the historical significance of this site.
In 1975, during the construction of the western road of Baqi, the grave was demolished, and rumors spread that Ismail’s (a) body was found intact during the process.
Today, the exact location of his burial remains unclear. Some believe it is near Umm al-Banin’s grave, near the Martyrs of Harra, or 10 meters from Halima al-Sa’diyya’s (r) grave at the end of Baqi.
