πŸ€– AI vs. cat memes

ChatGPT reacting to cat memes must be my new favorite show...

β™Ÿ Can AI play chess?

And they were afraid of it taking over the world. Since I play a lot of chess (you can challenge me here), that was pretty much my first prompt after the initial release of ChatGPT.

It was disappointing to see it miserably fail. Now it seems as if though it became even less skilled, failing to recognize which side plays first.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined...

🎨 Google has completely redesigned their sign-in page

For fair comparison, I attached the 2012 Google sign-in page. Which one do you prefer? It's an obvious pick for me.

πŸ€– Try AI?

Except Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing AI?) is significantly inferior to the free version of ChatGPT with the GPT-3.5 model at its core, despite being GPT-4.

Why?
Because Bing AI's moderation (read β€” censorship) is far stricter compared to ChatGPT. Any and all moderation is done on a vector math level. Content moderation within large language models is an active area of research, so any censorship comes at a cost. There is no optimal way to make the chatbot go Β«against the grainΒ» of the dataset it's been trained on, and as a result the moderation overhead causes performance losses.

To further understand this subject, you can read on general moderation and bias prevention in language models.

However, Microsoft Copilot has a direct Windows 11 integration... what a banger of an offer, right? Right?

Another shameless Windows 11 plug from Microsoft...

πŸ•Έ Firefox doesn't support Windows 8.1

Seems like I have been living under a rock for the past year, because this came out as a surprise to me and they announced end of support back in June of 2023. Firefox used to be the most Β«compatibleΒ» Windows browser, what happened?

πŸ” Ready, set, zoom in!

Later versions of Windows 10 have a small bug (read β€” feature) built into the notification toasts: you can zoom into them!

Seems like Microsoft forgot to restrict that particular feature from the custom XAML component the notification toasts are using... 😁

Persistence of the zoom setting for other notifications implies the UWP application does not unload after all notifications disappears.

If you're still on Windows 10, you can try it out right now. Be wary, though, zooming back to normal is rather difficult and there is no easy way to reset it.

Zooming is done by scrolling the mouse wheel up or down while holding Ctrl.

🌐 Another horrible change

YouTube keeps downgrading their web application. They just started rolling out the new layout, but we already have the first victims of that interface sharing their experience with us.

Psst... Here's what they changed:
display: flex;
flex-direction: /* column */ row;

The question now is... how much did that change cost? And more importantly, can you please hire me as a designer?

πŸ” Zooming into notification toasts

Since I'm the Windows guy here, I dug a little deeper. The zoom setting wasn't ever a problem in older versions of Windows, including Windows 10 LTSB!

The notification toast, as part of a UWP application, uses a XAML scroll control. As per the Microsoft documentation, you have to set the ZoomMode property to Enabled. The default value is, surprisingly, Disabled. Has some haphazard pasting taken place? (Thanks for correcting me, Julian Hasreiter!)

I can't be bothered to exactly pinpoint when that fiasco occurred, but it's safe to assume it's been at least several years without anyone noticing...

❗Beware of fake Enderman accounts

β–ͺ️ The only Telegram channel I own is @endermanch, and it's verified.

β–ͺ️ You cannot contact me on Telegram directly, but you can partake in the Discussion channel. I appear there from time to time.

β–ͺ️ If anyone calling themselves Β«the Real EndermanΒ» contacts you, they're definitely fake. I do not contact my followers directly.

β–ͺ️ My official accounts on different platforms can be found in the post I'm replying to.

Since my name is slowly becoming widely recognized across all different platforms, the impersonation scams are, unfortunately, bound to appear. Stay safe out there and don't get scammed!
