According to a report by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the United States throws away a staggering 40% of the food it produces every year. There are a number of reasons for this: restaurants and bakeries that throw away what’s left uneaten or isn’t sold; people who buy more groceries than they can use; and food distributors who throw out whole pallets when things go bad in transit. But one of the major culprits of food waste is supermarkets.

While this waste is a tremendous problem, especially when we live in a country (and a world) with widespread starvation, it also means that perfectly good food fills supermarket dumpsters every day. With a little bit of effort, you can make sure at least some of that waste goes to use and save yourself a lot of money in the process.

We’re told GDP measures the health of an economy. If it goes up, we’re doing well. If it drops, we panic.

But GDP counts everything that’s bought and sold. Oil spill cleanups. Hospital bills. Fast food. Plastic bottles. More spending equals better numbers, even if the spending comes from damage, sickness, or waste.

So what are we actually measuring? Progress or just consumption?

Maybe the real question isn’t how fast the line is rising.
It’s whether our people and our planet are actually better off.

The disparity between the number of politicians calling to abolish ICE and the proportion of the population that is clamoring to abolish ICE aptly illustrates the fundamentally reactionary character of political representatives as a class.

Change is going to have to come from us, from grassroots initiatives and direct action.
