📲 WalletConnect Community,

During the WalletConnect Season 1 Airdrop, some members of the WalletConnect community connected compromised wallets. Bad actors who gained control of these wallets identified a clause in the WalletConnect staking contracts that allowed them to transfer WCT from the compromised wallets to their own, despite WCT's transferability being disabled. This clause was designed as a convenience for node operators, enabling the node operators to stake tokens to another address once they held the private keys.

It’s important to note that the WalletConnect staking site and WalletConnect’s smart contracts were not compromised by bad actors. The attackers gained access to the private keys irrespective of the WalletConnect Network or the Season 1 Airdrop. As a result, WCT transferred from the compromised wallets will not be recovered by the WalletConnect Foundation.

Owners of affected wallets should:

Revoke Malicious Approvals
Use Revoke.cash or Optimistic Etherscan to revoke permissions granted to suspicious contracts, such as:

Official WalletConnect smart contract addresses can be found here. Users should only interact with the official contract addresses listed. WalletConnect has worked with Halborn, an industry leader in end-to-end security, to audit its smart contracts once again to ensure there are no vulnerabilities. Halborn found no vulnerabilities and introduced an update to prevent users from using the feature intended for node operators.

WalletConnect encourages the community to stay vigilant against suspicious links and phishing scams. Never click on unknown links or download attachments from unverified sources. Avoid interacting with wallets you suspect to be compromised, as this can expose your assets further. If you believe a wallet is compromised, revoke any approvals associated with it. Regularly review wallet permissions and update your security measures to stay protected.
