Evidence points that Russia is putting a lot of resources in to encircling the city, using these frontal attacks to fix defenders.

In general a lot of the narratives coming out of Bakhmut are weird. For example the "WW1 style human wave attacks".

So, Bakhmut, a thread. 1/ https://twitter.com/Tendar/status/1601358013427642368

Absolute carnage at the Russian post in Melitopol. At least six GMLRS struck it. I’m pretty sure that Russians lost dozens if not far more men in this strike alone, but we will know more in the morning. #Melitopol #Zaporizhzhia #Ukraine

SCOOP: U.S. officials have devised plans to send Ukraine JDAM kits, equipment that converts unguided munitions into “smart bombs” that can target Russian military positions with a high degree of accuracy, U.S. officials familiar with the matter say.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/12/14/ukraine-smart-bomb-jdams/

Anyone familiar with the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond knows that JDAMs are a significant battlefield capability. U.S. troops relied upon them to launch airstrikes on insurgents attacking them in relatively close proximity.

U.S. forces put JDAM kits on bombs of many sizes, from reasonably small to 2,000-pounders. They're bolted on and rely in part on GPS.

Whether the JDAM kits are in the next package of weapons going to Ukraine is unclear. Heard conflicting versions of that today. But they are certainly being discussed, I am told.

Has a previously-unseen munition been revealed in #Ukraine?

Recently video appeared showing shelling of a Russian position in the vicinity of Bakhmut, #Donetsk Oblast. The unusual explosions have led to to many theories- but we have a strong idea about what was really used.

Not so long ago we documented a new type of mortar ammunition with the Ukrainian army - a M971 120mm cargo bomb, which houses 24 M87 dual-purpose AT/AP submunitions in the standard version.

The M971 was originally developed and manufactured in Israel 🇮🇱.

Going by the explosion pattern, bomblet dispersion pattern and quantity, we believe that we are seeing these effective (but controversial) munitions in use.

Given submunition failures and absence of self-destructing feature for the M87 they may have unwelcome long term effects.

Who supplied them to Ukraine? That's not clear. A very limited number of countries reported possession of such mortar bombs and we tend to believe what we see was exported from a country which previously purchased these bombs from Israel.

Putin visited the headquarters of the special military operation on 12/16/2022. There is no official information about the location of the headquarters, but it will not be difficult to determine how much Putin risked his life.

Second photo was taken on 8/11/2022 during Shoigu's visit to the headquarters of the special military operation. The location of the headquarters was also not reported at that time, however, Shoigu had already visited this room earlier.

This photo was taken in March 2015, when Shoigu visited the newly opened Southern Regional Center for National Defense Management (SRCNDM) in Rostov-on-Don. As you can see, the photos show the same room, only the sign on the back wall has changed.

The SRCNDM is located at coordinates 47°13.424'N 39°42.265'E. Ironically, there is a circus in the next building. So, we found out that Putin is very brave and is not afraid of clowns. He can visit any Russian city if this city is not closer than 100 kilometers from the front.

The CIT's argument about the shelling of Donetsk is based on the shape of a dispersion ellipse.
Long story short:
1. Steeper trajectory results in the squeezed ellipses in the perpendicular direction at a short range of fire.

2. External attachment that slows down projectiles results in the same form of the ellipse.

There are two trajectories, steeper and flatter, that aim at the same distance.

Flatter trajectories at short distances give the ellipse elongated in the direction of fire; at long distances, the ellipse is elongated in the perpendicular direction.
Steeper trajectories in both cases result in the elongated ellipse perpendicular to the fire direction.

I calculate the maximal deviation in the direction of fire (blue line) and the perpendicular direction (orange curve) as a function of the firing range.
For flatter trajectories, depending on the range, one can be larger than the other.
