Those who have been following the position of the authorities that there is “insufficient evidence” on ivermectin will be interested to know that the world-renowned Cochrane Logo is based on a real meta-analysis. The logo’s meta-analysis of just 7 small trials (several with risk of bias concerns) has been used by Cochrane for decades to show the importance of pooling all relevant data, even from imperfect trials. Evidence from these small imperfect trials from a systematic review looking at steroids for mums of preterm babies was ignored for 10 years, leading to many unnecessary baby deaths while authorities awaited more trials.

Let’s not let the authorities make the same mistake again. In the context of the covid-19 health emergency, the stakes are much higher.
