Doran et al. (2016) examines the American H-1B visa program, which allows high-skilled foreign tech workers to work in the U.S. for a limited amount of time at top tech firms. They find that the effects of the visas are insignificant on patent growth and employment growth, and that they reduce employee wage growth and decreases the amount of training companies are willing to offer to prospective employees. Essentially, the visa has insignificant or negative effects on high-skilled employees.

Arcidiacono et al. (2012) examines the question of what happens after affirmative action beneficiaries enroll in college. They find that although AA students end their senior year with high GPA’s (suggesting no affirmative action mismatch effect) they drop out of harder majors much quicker than average students. So any major GPA differences are due to difficulty in classes, because STEM courses are more difficult than social sciences.

Activists were literally just guessing the number of homeless people.The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless used guesstimates to inflate the number of homeless people. The true number was about 10 times smaller.

Conservative and scientific magazines were much more likely to use the correct estimates when they were published.

Just open an economics textbook. It’ll talk about rent-seeking, partial and general equilibrium, nominal rigidity, et al. That’s not even to say those theories are totally applicable to the real world, but they’re much different from any Sowell or Friedman book you read.
